Some people like hardware. Some like software. Some like both.

I like hardware. Hands on, don't have to look at a computer screen, sounds good.

I like software. Flexibility, convenience and variety. Sounds good too.

Sometimes I prefer playing with software, other times I prefer playing with hardware.

I think it might be fun to treat software purchases as we might treat hardware purchases, i.e. pick a small number of synths that cover a lot of ground, then get to really know them. Hardware, software, it's all the same really.

If I went software-only, I'd still want to have one hardware instrument just to be able to switch it on and chill out with, so I don't have to sit in front of the computer. Hmmm, so that's not really "software only".

Now I'm going round in circles. Like this thread.

No need to run a virus scanner on them is a good enough reason alone for me to keep using hardware over software. Just ran across a false positive installing some sound wares on my puter

Viruses on PC's [and macs eventually, I'm sure my MBP isn't immune] may be so, but there's plenty of digital hardware with buggy OS's and incomplete bugfixes. Analog equipment isn't failure-proof either - voice chips on Junos, electrolytics can leak, solder can fur up with time...

And everything's at the mercy of a power failure.

I'm always eyeing up hardware, but I've never felt the need to take sides. Why should 'I've never used hardware/software/macs/pcs/digital/analog [delete as applicable]' feel like a badge of honour, or some exclusive club entry requirement? I proudly pick the best of what's on offer, and couldn't care less whether it's physical or virtual, in-fashion or outdated, digital or discrete... If it sounds right at home, I'll make a home for it.

yeah my SP 808ex zip disks got infected with that motherfu*king RECYCLER virus. I defecate over the guys who made this USB virus.

this virus replicates on all the storage media devices that you connect on your USB port.

I make backup of my samples to the PC, and the fuc-ing virus infected the ZIP disk.

I have lost a lot of sampling work due to a PC virus. I can't believe it

With software I would bet that nobody comes up and says "Wow, is that the Aruria Minimoog V? I've always wanted one of those!"

Software can't replicate the grit and warmth of an old Moog or SEM. Hardware synths can't do what VST's like Alchemy or Omnisphere do. You know what ? In the case of hardware versus software, I can have my cake and eat it too! Why limit yourself one way or the other?

Anyway, I'm with the "do whatever the f**k you prefer" movement, so I use hardware and I use software. But a mix of p***s factor, nostalgia factor, and the fact that I just feel more comfortable with it, make me prefer hardware.

I learned to synthesize on a Juno 106. I'm simply more comfortable on hardware. I have software options, but somehow, I always gravitate back to the 88keys and get lost in that world. More right brained for me.

Ha ha, you know I'm soooooo tempted!! Runs flawlessly on linux/wine so that's another +1 for FM8. And it's software that takes full advantage of the computer.... and it would sit great with my other stuff and.... can you smell gas?
