Alesis USB-MIDI Cable Connects MIDI To Computers

Post by Hugo76 » Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:10 am

Summer NAMM 2009:
"Alesis announces the USB-MIDI Cable a cable that links MIDI instruments with computers via USB. The USB-MIDI Cable will make its debut at Alesis' booth, number 400, at the Summer NAMM Show held at the Nashville Convention Center, July 17 — 19.

The USB-MIDI Cable is the latest addition to Alesis' AudioLink Series of problem-solving cables for musicians. The MIDI-to-USB cable has traditional male and female MIDI (DIN) connectors on one end and a USB connector on the other. Musicians can use the USB-MIDI Cable to control virtually any MIDI-compliant software using any hardware device with a MIDI output jack, such as a keyboard, drum pad or MPC.

The USB-MIDI Cable is class compliant for plug-and-play USB connectivity on Mac and PC, requiring no software-driver installation or external powering. Musicians can use the USB-MIDI Cable with virtually all music production, sequencing and recording software.

"This new cable is perfect for bringing older MIDI controllers into today's computer-music age," said Jim Norman, Product Manager, Alesis. "The USB-MIDI Cable is one of those problem solvers that should be in every studio as an insurance policy, if nothing else."

The USB-MIDI Cable will be available from musical instrument and professional audio retailers Q3 2009."

seems cool specially since it doesn't need any drivers...

Yes, its another USB MIDI cable... just like the ones from Yamaha and Roland and Emu and M-Audio and Turtle Beach and Hosa and brand X Chinese manufacturer...

If they wanted to make it more useful, they could have put a ADC on it and a set of 1/4 inch leads. "Doesn't need any drivers" means it uses the "class compliant" driver built into your operating system. Note that this may also mean it may not work under OSX 10.5.7.

I wasn't aware of any such previous cables. Do you have any examples? Cuz I'd like to get one asap.

The Alesis model requires no drivers. The chip in the cable does the work of translating the MIDI signal to USB as opposed to what the other manufacturers do (rely on software on your computer to make the translation). that's why it's so special, right?

Nope. None of the other cables rely on software on the computer to do the translation.

A quick Google came up with dozens, most plug and play - no drivers. Those that do need 'drivers' only use the driver to make the OS recognise the device, not for translation.

These cables have been around for years, move along nothing to see here...

Exactly.

Class compliant devices have been around since at least OSX 10.2, if not before. Most Midi interfaces I've used have been class compliant, needing drivers for a Midi device only ever happens when you've got additional functions available like soft thru and other routing options that occur in the device itself.

Yeah, I see there are many different versions. How on earth did I miss that?!? Jeez... Well, I'm off to pick up some, then :D

Some of the ones that 'don't need drivers' include drivers anyway and there's a bit less latency if you use the drivers.

Sorry to bring this up again, but anyone know if there are latency issues with these cable midi interfaces?

Depends on the cable and the drivers.
How does one "sage" a thread? Because this one needs it.

Latency's generally due to your soundcard's drivers, not to USB MIDI interfaces. Those deal with stuff like jitter and other millisecond timing inaccuracies.

USB/midi cables are fairly common. What I thought was kind of cool for cables from Alesis is their 'link' line:

and

It's not about "not using drivers", the alesis one uses drivers just like every other one does..

it is CLASS COMPLIANT which means the default midi/usb driver that comes built into windows will work for it.. a driver is still installed, but windows does it automatically and in the background the first time you plug the cable in.
As for Mac OS - pretty much everything is class compliant for mac, because core audio/core midi is so damn awesome.

Alesis have rebranded the wheel.. hooray.
