1. Analog synths are better than digital ones.
2. FM7/FM8 isn't as good as the Yamaha FM synths.
Those have taken the cake with me to date.

I don't think these statements qualify as dumb. They're just statements of opinion and I would bet someone could make a good argument either way.Raiven wrote:1. Analog synths are better than digital ones.

I can't speak intelligently about the FM thing but I could make a good argument for or against digital or analog.
In fact, we could fill entire threads much like the hardware vs. software debate.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths
Mostly it seems like there's an offense when someone isn't taken as a Synth Expert at first glance.
I guess wearing clothes that don't quite fit and a shabby haircut should be clue enough, but it seems like a true insult occurs when someone doesn't know the Ins and Outs surrounding synths and poses a logical question or makes a statement based on (un)educated guesses.
I didn't know what MIDI was before I knew what MIDI was.
Makes sense that it might be an audio port.
I called everything a keyboard until I understood the distinction between Synths and ROMplers.
A MIDI controller with Pads looks just like a Drum Machine.
Maybe I shouldn't know the sonic differences between the Prophet 5 and Mini at 17 years of age.
Maybe the guitarist shouldn't give two craps about the what and hows when the keyboardist does his thing.
Who knows?
And I guess we all want to walk into Sam Ash or Guitar Center and have Jean Michel Jarre show us the newest bit of kit.

Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths coming from someone who acts like they know alot about synths while drinking juice in the hood.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths
Yes, it does suck work for minimum wage and to have your balls busted by the old geezer who has no intention of buying anything. He only walked in to flex his vast knowledge of synths and strangely enough- he only has intentions of making music with strange sounds by difficult means. I think his only purpose was to make sure his synth collection is still better than what's on offer.
Yes, I know I'm a pimply faced teen who only wants to work here for a discount on that Fender. And It stinks that Felix the synth-guy called in sick so they put me in the keyboard department. Now I have to contend with this guy who wants to ask me trick questions about oscillators and editing "snappy" envelopes. I don't want to embarrass myself so maybe I'll bluff my way through his open ended questions about the new Virus TI. Uh oh. He said "compared to his mini..." Mini what? Well I do know that the Virus is popular and used on many of today's hit records. I'll tell him that. Uh oh, he's naming old records and artists I've never heard of before. My god, he's ranting about how modern music sucks because of VAs. Um...Virginia?
I know, I'll appeal to his Ego and ask him if he's somebody famous. He sure seems to know a lot.
Oh no, he doesn't actually have a career in music or doesn't even seem to make music...
Uh oh, he seems to want a lot of respect because of his signature on a place called VSE. He mumbled something about posting about me in a thread. Oh well, lost that sale. Great. ... Oh there's a kid looking at the MicroKorg. I bet I can sell one of those.

Re: Dumbest thing you've ever heard someone say about synths
I remember I used to think that synths was a kind of keyboard, just way more complex.
And when I first was told about analog synths and that you could make your own sounds on those I thought that all the synths with a lot of knobs on them was analogue...
I used to be dumb, and I still am

A synthesizer will be for you what you want it to be...
