Best synth ever!

Post by superfly » Tue Jul 28, 2009 4:19 pm

1) Which is the best and most complete synth ever made? Or, which ARE the best and most complete?
2) Which is the most expensive synth?

There is no such thing as a best synth. Nearly every synth has a unique sound and everyone's tastes are unique. However, many synths can sound like another.

The Yamaha CS-80 was expensive for its time ($7K in '77) and still fetches premium prices in the used market today. The NED Synclavier was very expensive when it was instruduced in the early 80's. The Fairlight and PPG systems were also quite expensive in the early 80's.

aside from (poly) modular systems, i'd say the andromeda is the most complete (analogue) synth out there. which doesnt mean it's the best ever made (which is, as Z pointed out, a subjective thing).

lots of vintage synths go for horrible prices. good luck searching for a ARP 2600 grey meanie or yamaha gx 1, which would for sure reach quite high prices.

This subject has been asked before, search before posting next time.

1) The most complete is the computer. More polyphony, more architectural options, able to run many different kinds of sounds at once. (additive, FM, samples, VA etc.) Many different interface options available, if you want an 88 key weighted keyboard you can plug one in. Want a multitouch graphical display, plug one in. I'm sure this thread will fill up with people disagreeing, but the only way for this to proven wrong is by choosing a more limited definition of what a synth is.

2) Rare stuff goes for stupid amounts on the second-hand market if there's someone with lots of money who really wants it. There was a Yamaha GX-1 on ebay for $125,000 a while ago, but it didn't sell. I'm sure with the right buyer a Synthi 100, GX-1, original Moog Modular or an early Buchla could be the most expensive, although if it was ever for sale as a complete synth Hans Zimmer's modular would probably be the most expensive.

In short, there are no right answers to your questions because they aren't specific enough.

never warmed up to it, but over the years i'd have to vote for the M1 as the 'best and most complete'.

complete: synth, sequencer, effects

best?: sold like 100.000 units

Just in a "Superman vs. Your Dad" kind of vein:

1) Andromeda is pretty complete. And awesome.

2) Yamaha GX-1.
Too futurist to live.

Why does this thread feel like trolling or a joke?

Hardware wise? The Nord Modular series or a KORG OASYS will give most others a good run for their money I'd say.

Are those the speakers for such a tiny modular?

or the speakers "are" the other wall?

Yup we've covered this and it was determined that Michael Winslow is the best synth ever.
