I had wondered about this. The hardware synths that I currently know of doing such are the Alpha Junos. I think the waveshaping part is analog.
On a side-note, I read something from Bob Moog in response to why the Mini did not have PWM. And he said in those times PWM was only used in weak oscillators to fatten up the sound: the Mini gives you fixed 50, 25 and 10% pulses (or near) so if you want movement just detune a couple of oscillators.
