The Synth Only Drum Kit Challenge!

Post by HideawayStudio » Sun Sep 06, 2009 3:44 pm

Some of the responses to my synth only percussion thread have been interesting. After reading some suggestions about making drum kits I agree that it would be really cool if we all got creative and put the whole 808-909 thing to one side for a bit and submitted our own original synth only drum kits on VSE.

We'd need some basic rules. It goes without saying that each sound must be original and -not- sourced from sampled sounds ie. they must originate from analog/VA or FM patches. It's worth including wave sequenced sources such as PPG Wave or Waldorf microWave. Each final kit can be comprised of multiple synths provided they are within the rules.

This therefore excludes all ROM'plers, and all S+S synths eg. D-50, M1 etc...

Each kit could be posted as a short, high quality, mp3 containing kick, snare, hats, clap etc.... and include a demo.

If there is interest - can we agree on the rules!?

What's the format? I mean, I'd prefer velocity layers, keyswitches, round robin note variations (hihats anyone?) 'n things. Halion? Gigasampler?

Nice idea.

One thing, whabout ROMplers using single-cycle waveforms, that's not really distinguishable from a digital oscillator is it?

what's velocity layers, and keyswitches, and round robin note variations?

and halion and gigasampler?

other than that I'm in :) time to explore the FM-machine in the monomachine :)

:) ...that's a sign of the times! I wanted to keep this simple - just an mp3 of the raw sample set should be fine - if you want to include the raw velocity switches then that's fine but I thought if we stuck to mp3s then we can all hear and sample the results into whatever sampler we wish.... including my Emulator II !! Long live 5 1/4" disks :)

Mm, a bit primitive, don't you think? You want us to use dynamic synths (analogues with their osc phase/freq variations and FM with their operator phase differences) to create static samples again? Then what's the use of sampling these drums in the first place? You could as well go on and use those analogues and FM synths!

I tell you what I've done in the past: create cymbals with FM8 and sample about 16 velocities of it, each with 5 different pitches. The complete cymbal instrument is of course many (=hundreds) megabytes in size, as I don't loop, and stereo 44.1/16 cymbals tend to be large. But you get the best of both worlds: the dynamics of FM and the cheap CPU usage of (streaming) sampling. *That* is imho the only reason to sample these kind of synths, to get rid of CPU monsters while not loosing dynamics and variations.

Of course I could donate half an hour worth o' hi-hats, bassdrums, snares, cymbals, toms etc. but no-one's gonna to edit all that and use its intended power.. maybe only an individual sound, which will end up as a static sample with its static qualities.

The other way: a .gig or Halion file *can* be extracted to individual .wav samples, pleasing all the folks here with their Emulators, Fairlights, Synclaviers and whatnot. So: think again about a native format!

:) OK ok I get the point.... mind you I do wonder how we survived with our 8/12 bit PCM based Linn drums and SP-1200s containing a few hundred Kbytes of memory. Anyway... probably best then if all those who want to post kits do so in the portable format of their choice and also post an mp3 demo of it in action. All I want to do is make sure we can all hear the results. :)

With a Nord Modular G2 it's not that hard, even without including the DrumSynth or the OscPerc oscillators.
I can try to do a small kit tomorrow, built up of some ideas I already used.
You are looking for Mp3 file?
Where would it be possible to post it?

I have made some drums and percussion with my JX-8P. :)
I could make a MP3 demo and are also willing to share the SYX.

Cool - as I said before it's probably best to post an mp3 of the sounds one by one and then a demo. If anyone wants to post or link the original patch data / sample banks then that's fine too. :)

I did this before and they are all raw one-shot samples in wave format.
I used the DSI Mopho to generate all these custom sounds and samples.

No MP3s, but here's a track using nothing but the sounds from this set.
