Van Halen "Why Can't This Be Love" What Synth Is That ?

Postby Grindlay » Sun Sep 06, 2009 8:08 pm

Can anyone identify the synth/board that good ol' EVH is playing in this clip ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJLk8VjnZBg&feature=related

Sounds like an Oberheim but clearly isn't, at least not one I'm familiar with.
Cheers

LOL

I like that on the You Tube comments, you're like "Let's see what the synth nerds have to say." haha

God Sammy sucks. Dave is the man.

"Synth nerd" is a description I'm comfortable having applied to me. I'm just not nerdy enough to know what synth that is :D

'board in video is Kurz K250

Here's a scan from 1988 Keyboard World:

I'm pretty sure the synth used on actual recording is Oberheim OB-8. I remember it being a preset on the OB-8 I owned in early 90's.

I don't really know the K250's rear jack configuration, but from my magazine scan, it looks like MIDI coming out of that beast, so EVH could be triggering an OB-8 via MIDI.

As far as the broken keys, my guess would be road abuse either by EVH and/or roadies.

the sound comes actually from an Oberheim xpander controlled by the Kurz, VH didn' t use the OB series anymore in this era, they had a new equipment including matrix 12, xpanders, tx816 and other modern gear as they progressively turned into a more " pop" music.

You're right, the blue & red cables appear to be connected to the MIDI interface on the left side of the K250 back panel.

I'll try to dig it back up again. Not sure where it is since I've moved since I made that scan. If I do find it, I'll post a link to my Photobucket as to not hijack this thread.

@Strangenono, are you sure it's XP-1 or M-12? Doesn't sound like it to me. I would put money on OB-8.

Matrix range of synth can produce it, I' ve done it on my jx10 but The Xp1 and Matrix were mentionned as the generators of that sync patche on this tour in a Van Halen Biography I bought years ago, it may be wrong...

Eddie had a Roland JX8p so I read in a 1987 or 1988 magazine article. It has a sync lead patch. He could have used it, if not then likely the OB8.

I remember in an article I read in the late 80's that Eddie recorded that song with his OB-8, split with arpeggiator and a unison patch. If I remeber correctly, the person writing the article said Eddie had 3 OB-8's in his 5150 studio!

He wasn't using Oberheim nor Kurzweil on that performance, you can clearly see some letters on the side and the buttons of the keyboard are like the chiclett type. As far as I know Yamaha DX7 had buttons like that and the Roland JX8p but you can also see on the video the type of moduling wheels the synth has since it's not the joystick type from Roland it could only be an Yamaha Synth. Doing a little research on it and knowing that DX7 didn't have that size and those type of keys which looks like piano keys I've found out that he was wither using an Yamaha KX76 or Yamaha KX88.

It was a factory preset on my Oberheim Matrix-6R. It was the only synth I had that nailed that sound 100%. So an Matrix 6/12 or Xpander is the answer. K250 as controller/sampler.
