Re: Gary Numan - Cars
You need a Polymoog and a Minimoog.
A Motif will not get you there. A Nord Lead 3 will get you somewhat there.

Dude isn't trying to recreate the song exactly, just do a cover.maindeglorie wrote:You need a Polymoog and a Minimoog.

OP: If you don't know how to program the sounds yourself just flip through the presets til you find something close.

Agree with Stab Frenzy - just use your ears to find what you need or learn to program the Motif for those sounds.

A basic square/pulse monophonic lead with lfo for vibrato on aftertouch or mod wheel about 25-35 % portamento , a little delay + plate reverb should do you just fine .
Some wish to leave their mark ... I want to leave a scar .

Gus Lead with a Dual voice of (something saw-y). You'll know when it sounds just right.

Intro: Square with Mod wheel. Dual voice some sort of LFO pad sound.
Check out my cover:
All done on the MM6, which has pretty much the same sounds. Good luck, and have fun!

Re: Gary Numan - Cars
For the vibrato, use an LFO routed to either a low pass or bandpass filter.
For the 'signiature' sound at the beginning obviously!
I successfully recreated this on my EX7 (The first Motifs were based on a cut down EX5/7)... If I get time I'll find the patch and post the settings.

Re: Gary Numan - Cars
Righty, I just though I'd post it straight away...
My version is a little 'meatier' than the original version but it's pretty damned close.
I used 3 oscillators, all "1o1Saw" samples from my EX7 ROM.
Pan and level:
Oscillators one and two are panned hard left and right (but you don't really need that if you don't want it) with both oscillators set at a level of 90 (out of 127). Oscillator three is centrally panned with a level of 83. You may need to raise the levels a bit though, you'll see why in the filter section.
Pitch:
Oscillator one is pitched at +7 cents, Osc two at -7 cents and Osc three at -12 semitones.
Filter(s):
I know the EX7 has a different architecture (more filter stages) than the original Motif but the ES may be different so bare with me...
The SCF (static contol filter) is set to L/H Shelf with the same settings for all three oscillators. The high frequency is set to 188 (out of 241) with a gain of +16 (out of 32). The low frequency is set to 100 with +32 (full) gain. If you don't have an SCF, don't worry, it's not major and only changes the sound a little. Without it you'll only need to raise the level of the oscillators a bit. I suppose you could try an EQ with some low and high boost instead of it though.
The DCF is set to the digital 24 db/oct low pass filter for all oscillators though the settings for each are slightly different...
OSC1 DCF: Freq is 155, gain is 235 and resonance is 14.
OSC2 DCF: Freq is 171, gain is 235 and resonance is 18.
OSC3 DCF: Freq is 171, gain is 235 and resonance is 24.
On the EX7, the max Freq and gain settings are 255, max resonance is 31.
Filter EG:
Start level of -20 (out of 127) and about 1.5 seonds of time until it's level.
Amplifier EG:
The same for all three oscs. Attack of 20 (out of 127) and decay of 36. Sustain at max.
LFOs:
This is where things are a little unexpected. If you listen cloely to the original sound, you can hear in the background a slow saw going 'doooo-doooo' in addition to the triangle LFO of the 'vibrato'. So...
OSC1 LFO: Saw wave with a low speed (listen to the audio example) a bit of dealy and a bit of fade in.
OSC 2&3 LFOs: Both triangle waves with the same delay and fade settings as for OSC LFO. Faster speed though, judge that for yourself.
Controller sets:
In my case I have the mod wheel to bring in the effect of all three LFOs. All of them are routed (positively) to filter modulation depth. This patch only uses filter modulation, there is no vibrato or tremolo.
As for other settings, set the filter to track the keyboard and adjust other things to taste. I've added a tiny bit of hall reverb to my version. Obviously, you don't need to spread it across the stereo field as I have done... I just like my patches to have width!
I thought I'd add an audio example to aid you in making this...
From Mediafire
The first clip is OSC1 only with me bringing up the saw LFO depth on the mod wheel. Clip two is all three oscillators with me bringing up the mod wheel (for all LFOs) again. Clip 3 is the sound in all it's natural (non mod wheel fiddling) glory! Clip 4 is me holding an octave for more meat!
Enjoy!
