Reminds me of the "let's bring down the price of the sh-101" thread. If stuff gets mentioned here prices are *bound* to drop.

Prehaps i should have named this 'Your least favorite Roland, Korg and Yamaha Synth' :)

For me:

SH-201 - I use this every week in college and really don't like its sound. To my ears it lacks punch on the bottom end and sounds rather bland and ordinary most of the time. I just think it has a really uninterestingsound and prefered the 2 JP-8000's i once owned, which had bags more character.

Poly-800 - Im aware a lot like it im not a fan. On the 2 units i tried the sound seemed too clean compaired to Juno's and i couldent get along with the single filter.

Yamaha - Can't choose one as im only experienced with the CS and DX range which are just great.

Roland MC-303 or TB-303

Korg Poly 800, and the Microkorg XL is downright ugly. Haven't heard it though.

Don't think I have a worst/least favourite synth. I haven't played any bad ones! Although I did have an aversion to my Novation Nova, it's gone away now and I'm glad I kept it.

I agree, its looks awful. The original looked a thousand times better.

I've heard a little from it[youtube] and it doesn't seem like anything special.

Ok--least favorite from what I've owned or used:

Yamaha DX21: a b***h to program when you're 13 and couldn't compare to the AN1x and FS1r I once had.
Korg Poly-800: it's not that it's that bad, but it's didn't do that much for me compared to the DW/EX-8000, Polysix, or R3.
Roland Alpha Juno-1: again, not a horrible synth, but I preferred all of the other Roland stuff I've owned compared to it

Yes! Exactly, I've often think about this when I'm in the local shop, who in the name of f@#k is going to buy this POS for 4k ?!? Gimme a motif over this aaanyday

balma wrote:Roland. After the V synth, I haven't seen anything interesting from them.....
Well, I don't mind the Fantom ROMplers from Roland for what they do, but yes as far as true synthesisers go I tend to agree with you on this :x

My vote goes for the Roland & Edirol sound canvas' - truly horrible yuck! :?

Roland D-70 What were they thinking?
Korg Poly-61 Find one that still works properly.
Yamaha DX-27 How much could they cut down a DX-7 and still call it FM?

I only have a Roland nomination here: The Sound Canvas.

There was a JV30, which was essentially a Sound Canvas, so it's a valid entry.

The problem with this Sound Canvas and the related General Midi/General Standard was that each and every f*cking synth/keyboard (various companies) from those days became a GM synth. Gone were the days of new/unique sounds, everything was GM, playing back GM midi files was like the most important thing. Gone were the days where you had full control over your sounds, ADR/CutRes/Vib seemed to be enough for all editing. Gone were the days of interesting wave ROMs, no no no, every ROM now had a bird tweet, a telephone, helicopter and a great bunch o' small crappy acoustic sounds, and all wanted to fit into a 4MB ROM. Oh, and while being a popular sound at the time, the 909 Kick/SD/HH/OH was rarely to be found, instead we had to make trance/house with an 808 kit.

Bleh.

Yamaha: the aforementioned FB-01. Just a box to make noise.

Korg: the M1. Yeah, I know it was the synth that launched ten thousand albums in the late '80s and early '90s, but it also set the template for boring, low-programmability ROMplers lacking interesting synthesis features like resonant filters, hard sync, portamento, audio-rate FM, and other functions. It acted as a template that corrupted the market for a decade.

Roland: DJ-70. Crass, very crass.

ItsMeOnly wrote:That's a heavy one. It's difficult to find any "worst" synth, previous suggestions were for "budget" synthesizers, that were cut down so the price would be affordable to enthusiasts.
However, when you think about price vs. build quality vs. features:

Yamaha: VL1 - the price tag that was really devastating, which was later proven with PLG-VL and VL70m (latter especially with Patchman ROMs)
uh?

VL is an astonishing synthesis technology. Haven't heard something that could emulate better windy sounds than the VL

Get the EX5 it has VL synthesis, you can get a rack in $500, definitly even underpriced....

I second that one! You know it sucks when your house gets broken into and all your gear cleared out with the exception of the MC-303. Now that's bad and it did happen!
