Re: Worst Roland, Korg and Yamaha Synths?
I would agree on that FB01, about as nice as a Sound Blaster .. but can anyone name this annoyance: -ERR 144 REBOOT?

This thread sure makes me glad I never randomly bought a FB-01 like I've considered.

Here's another vote for the JV-30. Which, sadly, was my first "real" synthesizer. I should have bought a used Jupiter 6 or something--I could have gotten one for cheap back in the early '90's.CS_TBL wrote:I only have a Roland nomination here: The Sound Canvas.
There was a JV30, which was essentially a Sound Canvas, so it's a valid entry.
The problem with this Sound Canvas and the related General Midi/General Standard was that each and every f*cking synth/keyboard (various companies) from those days became a GM synth. Gone were the days of new/unique sounds, everything was GM, playing back GM midi files was like the most important thing. Gone were the days where you had full control over your sounds, ADR/CutRes/Vib seemed to be enough for all editing. Gone were the days of interesting wave ROMs, no no no, every ROM now had a bird tweet, a telephone, helicopter and a great bunch o' small crappy acoustic sounds, and all wanted to fit into a 4MB ROM. Oh, and while being a popular sound at the time, the 909 Kick/SD/HH/OH was rarely to be found, instead we had to make trance/house with an 808 kit.
Bleh.

Or put down a few more pennies, and go for the JV80. While being a little cheesy by today's standards, it was fully programmable.

Yeah, but the JV-80 could only due 8 tracks at once while the JV-30 could do 16!CS_TBL wrote:Or put down a few more pennies, and go for the JV80. While being a little cheesy by today's standards, it was fully programmable.
So, the JV-30 must be better, right?

I have both a JV-80 and JV-35 (updated JV-30)Robonaut wrote:Yeah, but the JV-80 could only due 8 tracks at once while the JV-30 could do 16!CS_TBL wrote:Or put down a few more pennies, and go for the JV80. While being a little cheesy by today's standards, it was fully programmable.

I don't mind either one. If I have to play a show and need quick and easy access to basic sounds (piano, strings, pads, etc) They do the job well. I would like to get my hands on a JV-1080 or 2080 and some more expansion boards in the not-too-distant future, to expand the palette.
Waveforms, and filters, and knobs. Oh my!
