My thought of the moment:

"If you can master everything and anything to do with a Moog Theremin, you can master everything and anything."

It's a great inexpensive way to get into analogue synthesis. Without that little invention in 1919, known as a Theremin, we wouldn't have a Moog Voyager and probably a lot of other synthesizers. Would we even have synthesizers at all? Who knows...

So my nominee is the Moog Theremin. (Thanks for the reminder, R., of where it all came from).

If that doesn't count, then I second the Moog Voyager - (and all it's little modules and accessories).
MOOGSig: Voyager/Theremin, ROLAND: JP8000/MC505/MC50/SH1000/Octapad1/RE 20, CASIO VLtone, KORG: Prophecy/MS2000R/Kaos Pad2/D3200/D888/SDD4000/M3, BOSS SP202/DR110, YAMAHA:CS40M/QX7/WX7/QY10/Reface DX, ARP Exp, MACBETH M5, FR ORB, SONNET, ALESIS SR18

It's got to be somewhere in between the V-synth and the Andy...

The Andromeda? The Sunsyn? Omega 8 w/ the full complement of filters? Q+? Rozzbox V2? Voyager? S1 Mk2? The hundreds of remarkable modular environments built over the years as that scene, especially the Eurorack crowd, has exploded in popularity? I suspect that one can make a compelling case for any of these.
Yours,
Niall.

How about;

Analog Poly - Alesis A6 Andromeda (& Sunsyn)

Analog Mono - Moog Voyager

Analog Modular - MacBeth M5

Digital Hardware - Roland V-Synth

Digital Software - NI Reaktor 5

There, nice list

Exactly how I would have done it, except for:

Digital Software: FM8.

But in general, hmmm.... Voyager. :D

"Best" meaning... best for what - sounding like 2010?

that monolithic "cube-thing" that some guy built with modules on all the sides. that's the best.
there's more modular choices than ever...not so many w/ keyboard analog polys today (there's only 3 to choose from new) so "a modular" wins the prize today, even though I have little need for one.

among keyboard instruments: eh...maybe the Neuron is most distinct.
software - i haven't tried 'em all and never will, but Neuron VS is my favorite so far.
interesting....

Software synths.

They will be remembered as the synths of the decade...in a bunch of years people will be working more and more with hardware...

why?

Unless you mean that portable VSTi-players get a more traditional keyboard shape, aimed at everyday musicians..
