Wasn't the XS released in 2008? That version discussed in the article was never produced iirc.

Here is my spontaneous top five . . .

1) microKORG -- for its exceptional value

2) V-Synth -- for its multilayered sonic versatility

3) Andromeda -- for its total analog domination

4) Virus TI Polar -- for its design

5) Electribe series -- for its collective infinite intuitive musical possibilities

Honorable Mention (my dream machine) DSI Mono Evolver -- for its "all of the above"

:)

ROLAND Micro-CUBE; YAMAHA PSS130, PSS140; ZOOM FS-01, MRS-4B, MRT-3B

Wanted: BOSS DR-110; CASIO CZ-101; YAMAHA CS-01, DX-100

Best is a majorly loaded term here. Too many ways to look at it.

Best sounding.

Opinions on best in sound are like arseholes: everyone has one. There are some synths that had me at hello and never let go: The Evolver, the Voyager and the Buchla 200e have each affected me in that way.

Best in spec:

I'd have to say the Andromeda. I don't own one. I get lost everytime I touch one. However, it has everything that a synth fanboy can ever ask for: Great sounds? Yes. Pure analog? Check. Polyphonic? Yup. Comprehensive interface? Sure 'nuf. Troubled history? Absol-fricken-lutely. ;)

The Moog Voyager is another contender as it made the Mini accessible (well, more accessible) to the masses, made it an easier stage instrument with MIDI and presets and did it for about 1/2 of what a MiniMoog D would cost in today's dollars.

I'd also say the Buchla 200e. I've seen and heard a 200e system and it sounds so damned musical. Not that it matters but it is also looks absolutely gorgeous.

Historically most significant.

Each decade has one or more synths that were not only great sounding but led some sort of musical revolution.

In the 1970's: gotta be the MiniMoog.

In the 1980's: it's a toss up between the DX-7 and the TB-303. I'd lean towards the DX-7 because its impact occurred in the 80's.

In the 1990's: For me, it's got to be a VA of some sort. I'll choose the Virus just because I own one.

This decade: It's too soon to have a real perspective. It would be fun the say the MicroKorg. I'm going to have to go with Reason. This was the decade of the VST.

ever been to a chili cook-off? Everyboby's chili is much the same...just different spices (mostly).
My thought for the best synth of this decade is the one that introduces 'new' features that will be copied by others in the the future... and enshrined in players memories: (Remember when XXX introdeuced that circut that let you do YYY to ZZZ? What a blast!....Yeah, then every manufacture started putting that feature (with a different name) in to all their synths.....)

Remember (not in exact order):
patch memory
polyphony
auto tune
voice layering
velocity/aftertouch
MIDI
built in FX
card/disc storage
linear arithmetic
FM
arpegiators
wavetable scanning
LCD screens
patch morphing
multiple synth methods in one box
load-your-own samples
time/pitch shifting

IMHO, the real test of 'best' synth of today will be which one passes more of its DNA on to future synths.

Nice list. I'd add these features along as well:

mod matrix
trademark filters
alternate controllers (breath, ribbon)
audio input source for OSCs
re-sampling
velocity cross-switching
loopable envelopes
MIDI-syncable delays, LFOs
communication w/ PC for storage/editing/sequencing
trademark synth type (physical modelling, granular)

Pretty sure that everything mentioned in the last 2 posts was introduced before 2000.

Can't really think of any noteworthy new technique or feature that was introduced since 2000.

je je who said Microkorg?

I would sell my a*s for an A6.

I think that Alesis has gone really far away the last years. Fusion-Ion-Andromeda are the Holy Trinity

I don't consider the V synth as the one of the best synths, but indeed the best sampler of the last 10 years. Its combination of:

-Variphrase
-Lots of controllers
-hyperfriendly user interface
-easy editing and filter/effect section
-computer friendly
makes him a great option as a hardware sampler. The best one....
His sex dungeons are rumored to hold hundreds of people in secret locations around the world.

that's crazy talk.. here's just a few of the obvious ones..

-realtime modular (patching) software synthesis (ok, 97/98 but close enough... it's major impact came in the 2000's)
-redistributable 3rd party and open plugin architectures ala VST 2.0 and soon after VSTi (which was actually beat to the punch by freeware such as Buzz)
-realtime pitch/time shifting and insane improvements to resamplers compared to the previous decade
-new uses/repurposing of granular synthesis (also in realtime, unthinkable in prior years)
-new uses of FFT and Spectral DSP (also in realtime, unthinkable in prior years)
-the impact of 3-axis controllers and X/Y control pad thanks to a much improved design than previous attempts
-software interfacing with extremely flexible control surfaces (prime ex., monome)
-use of MIDI has greatly expanded, and new technologies such as OSC are introduced
-useable/affordable hardware & circuit modeling realtime DSP and V/A for the masses instead of in labs or on vapourware dedicated hardware

Realtime pitch-shifting, granular synthesis, and FFT with spectral DSP has been available since the 1980s via Eventide and Symbolic Sound Kyma.

Microkorg, VSTs, Moog instruments
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

Also first surround sound synth - fun fact of the day

Laptop genius BT loves Neurons apparently, when his studio's not getting robbed that is - poor guy, I think he lost one of these.
