I'm using "best" in an humanitarian sense ... not that I don't love them both !
In hardware my vote goes to the DSI MoPho/TETR4 feature rich analog synthesizers almost any musician can afford .
In software Reactor 3 (and up) : this was a game changer in the world of native dsp based synthesis

Analog Poly - Alesis A6 Andromeda (& Sunsyn)
Analog Mono - Moog Voyager
Analog Modular - MacBeth M5
Digital Hardware - Roland V-Synth
Digital Software - NI Reaktor 5
There, nice list

Let me sum up the rest of the posts in this thread for you real quick:
Best synth of the 00s? Something the poster owns, which may be in direct opposition or right on par with your decision, the determining factor being whether you own (or want to own) that same synth as well.
As a matter of fact, I am willing to bet this factoid will ring true on most any thread that deals with subjective terms like "best" or "worst"

I said Andromeda and I don't have one, and I refused to accept the statement that the V synth is the best one and I owe one.

Strongly disagree with the Macbeth on the modular front. There've been many strong develpments in that field from many others in the 00s. Modcan, Cynthia, Cwejman...

To be honest I imagine in a few years, the magazines etc will be more likely to deem the best synth as something like the microkorg....

Well as far as making synths accessible to the masses and making them popular, which has lead to more synth manufacturers being able to make more expensive and better synths, it's actually probably the most important synth of the decade by far. People who don't know any synths know the Microkorg, cause they've seen lame MoR bands like the Killers using one.kuroichi wrote:To be honest I imagine in a few years, the magazines etc will be more likely to deem the best synth as something like the microkorg....

The Andromeda gets my vote as the best Analogue Poly without a dobt. Not just because it sound increadible, it's nice to have something that isnt trying to emulate or be something else...something that does it's completely own thing.
A6 Andromeda, MS20 Mini, M500SP, DS-8, Motif 7, DX11,

Actually, a lot of “professional” bands in the 2Ks (particularly the early half) employed the Microkorg/MS2000. One could easily argue that the microkorg/MS2000 is the DX7 of this decade, if not an important part of the sound of the decade. You can’t say that about the Andromeda.Stab Frenzy wrote:Well as far as making synths accessible to the masses and making them popular, which has lead to more synth manufacturers being able to make more expensive and better synths, it's actually probably the most important synth of the decade by far. Best is completely subjective and you have to decide what best means. I think this decade will be remembered most for VA’s and secondarily for the analog renaissance so far as synthesizers go.

so how about putting together a collection of factors to decide what "best" should mean in this thread?
eg:
best bang for the buck
best features
best sound
best selling
etc
