Oberheim Ob-xa/DSX/DMX CV-Gated together

Post by Dj Pound » Sat Nov 21, 2009 8:30 am

Has anybody on here used this particular no MIDI combination before? Is the DSX sequencer a good alternative to MIDI? Im curious to know the pro's and the con's of this setup. As Ive got my eye on all three machines at a local music shop around the way. The guy is asking $2000 for the entire rig :!:

Does anybody here currently use this setup?

Thanks for your help!

I don't have that setup but I've CVed up an OBSX to a tb303 and I noticed it only plays the first card even in unison, so you may loose most of the XA's beefy mononess if it works the same way. It may not work like that with what your wanting to do and unison may kick in all your cards while sequencing via CV, but pre-warning you there may be a possibility it does work the same and if so it won't sound quite as good as perhaps what you may be expecting.

But would'nt you want to use the special interface that is provided with that system? Not CV

It is my understanding that with the DSX, you have one polyphonic track using the proprietarty digital bus and either a OB-Xa or OB-8 and up to 8 monophonic tracks using the CV/Gate outs for your mono synths.

$2K for OB-Xa, DMX & DSX - I'd snatch that up without hesitation if I were you and worry about hooking them all up later.

Thanks to everyone for the info! Unfortunately theirs a few problems with about 5 of the keys on the ob-xa, as well as some really bad buzzing line noise on the DMX :? I finally got to check the gear out this morning. I decided to pass.
The guy wasnt willing to come down on his price, and I just dont have enough money right now to pay someone to fix the problems.
Oh well..........Maybe next time!

Again, thanks for the help
