In my (limited) experience using synths I'd say...

BEST: AN1x
WORST: Never owned a bad synth... (lucky me!)

Edit: tried some very dodgy synthedit creations though... I guess they don't count!

I would have to say the best would be the evolver - you do get a lot of stuff for what you pay and it is so flexible with modulation routings. Once you get used to the interface it is a very imediate wynth to program on.

...On the roland/Korg issue... I really dont much care for what roland make now, it doesnt seem marketed to this crowd of people, Korg on the other hand does seem a lot more innovative and original, I still wouldn't buy another new korg synth, but out of the big 3 they seem the best.

I've just been watching your evolver demos on youtube :) Good stuff. I'll probably be making a purchase next year, I'm looking at either blofeld or desktop evolver...

Another vote for the desktop Evolver as the best.

Worst? I had a Red Sound eleVAta that keep locking up every few minutes, made it totally useless...no wonder they went out of business. I sold mine to a guy who owned two and wanted a third :?
I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

I have seen this thread many times but with different presentations...

best synth under $500? So hard to answer, there are so much cool synths under $500, it depends of tastes and applications. Also, prices have variations.

there are synths that alternate between $450 and $600.... so....?????

Polysix, Evolver, Blofeld. Microwave, AN1X, JP8080, JP8000. Kurzweil K2000, etc etc

Worst: ?

The obvious answer for worst is a broken one that can't be fixed.

I've never seen an FS1R under $500 and I've been on the look out for the last year or so. add another $150/$200 to that maybe.

best:
Roland jd-990
Kurzweil K2000
Yamaha EX-5

plenty of other great synths out there well under $500.

Hmmm, all those EX-5 mentions have made me have a look at it, looks pretty great for under $500.

I'm also going to add the Kawai K5000 series for best, they're amazingly powerful and great value.

actually there is an FS1R on ebay right now for $550....lowest I've yet to see!
a friend of mine recently picked up an ex-5r for about $400. been playing around with it quite a bit when we collaborate and I've come up with some amazing sounds on there. I found it really easy to program as well....learned most of what I needed to know in minutes without much help.

I got my FS1R for 525$ i think. something like that. i remember when they sold for less then 500, now days i dont know. by the way the FS1R is probably the best digital synth hands down yamaha ever made that is under 550-600$. ppl overlook what it can do easily because of its massive scrolling and menus and stuff but all you need is the fs1r editor for computer and your set. not a beginner synth at all. i just got a virus c, Massive and FM8. so i don't know if ill get a FS1R again. but its a beast. it tempts me!!! ha

you can get all 3 of these for just a little over 500$'s added together:
jx-3p (without programmer u can get 1 for about $250, seen a few go cheaper than 200 on ebay but not in top shape)
a casio cz (i got my cz-1 for $150!)
and dw8000 (150-200)

and they're all very different from one another, no redundancy.
