I've always been of the opinion that any synth, whether RA or VA, simple or complex, inexpensive or costly, can be a useful tool in creating music. Well, I guess I have to admit that I was wrong.
A bass player friend of mine recently bought a used Roland SH201 and lent it to me for a couple of weeks.
This thing sounds like s**t. I've played 20 year old cheep Casios that sound better than this disaster. What the h**l was Roland thinking releasing this peace of junk? My seldom used Red Sound Dark Star has more sound character than this plastic joke of a synth.
The biggest shame is that the layout is so nice. If all those controls were tweaking an impressive synth engine then I'd say this board, regardless of it's cheep, plastic build, would be a definite winner. But the truth is, the pads, leads, and bass (hah, hah, hah) that I tried to coax out of this thing wouldn't rank beyond a child's toy. The VCOs have no character (Ooo, supersaw, woopty f**k do) and the filter is the worst digital c**p I've ever heard.
In short, I hate this god-awful POS. It should've been sold for $19.95 in a Walgreens toy section.
Sorry for all the bullshit, but I hate being proven wrong.
And I hate the sound of the SH201. At least I don't own the f**k thing.
