customizing my synth; opinions needed

Post by danialad » Thu Feb 25, 2010 6:10 am

so i'm about to, once brought back o 100%, embark on customizing my Alesis Ion. I'm going to paint the whole chassis, redo the decals, replace the knobs (most likely), and either paint the side panels, or get custom wooden ones made.

chassis colors:
candy apple red (glossy)
nord-ish red (non-glossy)
waldorf microwave xtk-ish burnt orange (glossy OR non-glossy)
or something DSI evolver-ish blue (glossy or non-glossy)

knobs:
keep the plastic/rubber flat black ones
OR a shiny gold/silver/or black aluminum knobs
(depending on the chassis color, i imagine)

i figure a nice set of shiny white decals with black accents, either way.

and then, also depending on the chassis color,
paint the side panels... or... what?
or custom wooden panels... darkly stained?

i'm not sure how wood would look with the Ion.
i've seen one example online... but they were poorly made IMO,
and they didn't fit with the original paint job at all.

so...

anyone got any cool ideas??

Well if you want my opinion, I think you should leave it as-is unless it's in really ratty condition or something.
But that's me, and you can do what you want with your own property.

I'd get the ION working again before dumping any money customizing it ;)

I'm anti-gloss, looks cheap and tacky on a synth IMO.

Red gloss is great - I painted a cheap brother organ - shades of red gloss and stickers - made it look really cool - it's on a swampdwarf Youtube if you wanna see it - though the music was all DW8000 - how ever much I painted it, it still stayed a 'one trick poney'!!
