wow, what a job! big kudos :) and the price? the only figure I found was £100, which can't be the total I'm sure, I'd be interested to know the complete cost for a VCS 3 clone :)

just under the 100 pounds price i think he says that the other electronic parts can be ordered also. but for what i understand there's no pots, patchbay, jacks.

curious as well to know how much is the full kit

I've never done en electronics kit in my life, but jeez, this would be a great motivator.

Yes, I suspect when you tally up all of the parts, it's going to be a bit more!

I hope he sells the box, too.

I think a soundlab or paia would be a good start before trying this then! Troubleshooting ain't an easy thing if you've gotten in over your head.

Tell you what, I'll build yours for $8000 all inclusive. ;)

the standard kit will be pcbs + all parts excluding rare ones. but everything is possible, derek can provide em. these can also be ordered here

http://www.synthi.co.uk/prices.html

vcs 3 has 16x16 matrix. this vcs3 clone will have expanded possibilities (20x20 matrix!). that kind of matrix can be ordered in ghielmetti. you can also use standard one (16x16) but the price is almost 500E(!) coz it's custom. ah forgot to mention. ghielmetti also provides patchpins. use 2k7 1% ones

http://www.ghielmetti.ch/index.php?nav= ... n-50VAC/6A

the wooden case dimensions will be provided

here's beta sample

100 pounds was just for the circuit boards, no components.

Yeah the boards generally cost nothing, the components, case and hardware are the expensive things. And the time spent making it of course.

I could probably find a VCS3 for that.

if you have some skills in soldering then making this vcs3 will be no problem to you. wooden case can be made by woodworker for few $. the biggest pain is the matrix (160 E) and rare components. all else is a piece of cake

What does this mean exactly? The parts provided in the kit do not suffice for building a functional synth and you have to hunt down some parts that are hard to find yourself?

That sounds like... quite an unattractive deal to me, to be honest. I hope the parts that aren't included are specified beforehand, so that the people that purchase the kit can check out beforehand whether they can get those things in the first place. I hope I'm not talking entirely out of my a*s here. I am not aware of what are the realistic limitations regarding such isses.

From my experience with the x0xb0x I think this actually a very smart move. The rare parts (at least for the x0xb0x) are easy to find in small quantities suitable for 1 person's build (ie on ebay), but much harder to find in lots large enough for a kit manufacturer. Plus usually if the builder doesn't care they can substitute the rare parts with modern, possibly slightly less sonically pleasing, but easy to source, parts.

The x0xb0x's inclusion of rare parts was what kept their official builds so few and far between. Having them in the kit definitely makes it easier for an inexperienced builder, but I was able to source all the rare parts for the x0xb0x in about 2 hours.
