Possible synth find...Wish me luck.

Post by Cumulus » Fri May 21, 2010 2:43 am

A friend of mine works with a church lady who plays the organ at church.

She just switched churches two weeks ago and the pastor showed her his storage room where he has three "old keyborads" One of them is a Roland something-or-other but she doesn't remember what the other two were.

She said they were not toys but real, professional-looking keyboards. One of them has a lot of knobs on it.

She was going to have another look at them and she said they haven't beem used in years so the pastor is going to get rid of them, maybe even give them away.

I should know what they are tomorrow. My friend has first dibs on them but this is the guy who bought the Mini Moog for $250 and then sold it to me the next day for the same $250 because he just "couldn't get a decent sound out of it". I showed him some settings on it and he liked the sounds I got but he just couldn't be bothered with something that couldn't store presets....

Here's hoping they're something good. I told him if they are free to take them all no matter what they are and no matter what condition they are in.

This guy does have an appreciation for the old polysynths so he may actually keep one or more of them for himself.

If any of them are old analog dinosaurs they may be mine.

I won't be able to sleep tonight wondering what they are....

Actually, I'm not sure if she said "a lot of knobs" or just "knobs" so it could be almost anything.

I am hoping that there will be something my friend wants, one that I want, and one we can sell on Ebay for a few bucks.

A pair of Mini Moogs would be perfect. That way I would not be tempted to keep them since I have one.

Maybe I need to start going to visit different churches and offering to clean out their storage rooms.

i hope you intend to offer fair market value for the synths if they turn out to be desirable models.

ripping off a church is just... wrong.

...and i'm an atheist :)

I think this thing is somekind of "stealing". I mean let's suppose it's a Jup8... Are you able to take it for free even if YOU KNOW WELL the value of the thing? i'm an atheist too... but if there is something that can't make you sleep is the awareness your are fooling people.

or maybe we are all too envious

Perhaps the church is runned by money wich they ripp of good-hearted people.

There are some of those. Then you do a good deed if you ripp them of. Like Robin Hood, and give the Memorymoog to me...

(this thread is derailing quick...)

i don't disagree with you but i think your post is a bit of an oversimplification. a church, as an individual entity, generally does a lot of good for the local community. by "stealing", you are taking away from those good deeds.

however, religious organizations as a whole are generally corrosive to a civilized and enlightened society. so, i would not deceive an individual church by taking the synths below market value, but i would definitely rip off, say, the administrative offices of the catholic church. i don't think there is any debate that the catholic church is an evil, corrupt organization at the macro level.

there are obviously some major execptions. some (many?) of the "mega-churches" in the southern united states are pretty wicked in that they take in LOTS of money from the congregation (sheep?) in order to line the pockets of the clergy.
