Would you buy a PPG Wave if you had the opportunity for it?
... or can you think of several other boards that you'd rather spend such silly amounts of money on?
New demo clips of the 2.3 have been uploaded to youtube earlier this year:

This is always nice:

The more I listen to clips such as these, the more obvious the differences between the hardware units and the software recreations seem to be. I've always found the sound really interesting, but I'm not sure if they really are worth those prices they go for.

Re: Would you buy a PPG Wave if you had the opportunity for
The only reason I wouldn't would be because I have Sunsyn and Waldorf Microwave 1 to cover that ground. If I didn't have these, then it could be a different story. To me, it seems like wavetable synths are kind of the underground of synths. Only the MW XT seems to have a following behind it. I know the PPG is a great synth and quite a synth, but you know what I mean. No substitute for hardware when it comes to wavetable though.

I noticed the title might imply Buyer's Guide, but I intended to ask for people's opinions of the performance:price -ratio in the current time frame and general impressions of the units (as opposed to vsti etc.). It also gave me an opportunity to post that first clip in case someone's interested and not seen it yet. There haven't been too many demos around.

Re: Would you buy a PPG Wave if you had the opportunity for
Somewhat regretfully I wouldn't.
I've always wanted a PPG since about 1981(?), any PPG incl the wavecomputer because i simply love the sound.
However having seen pictures of someone's closet filled with them in various states of not working and currently having my fill of vintage synths with problems such that half of my stuff was in repair until a week ago, I wouldn't risk that kind of money.
If they made them new and they were reliable I'd buy one. But as they won't I'll make do the best I can with the Microwave1, the Waldorf emulation (and the forthcoming one) and Hermann Schrieb's version.
Still want a PPG though

What's behind that Wave (the grey/white one)?

It being behind a Wave may fool anyone in thinking it has a similar status.. for all I care it could be a random unknown consumer keyboard where you select sounds 'n styles in those matrices. Those dark patches at the ends, are those speakers? You know.. speakers.. suspicious 'n stuff..
Then again, I see 4 of those matrices.. sounds, styles.. but what more?

I don't see the casio logo or the bossanova pattern list.
Actually there are five x-y matrices, and under the screen, there is something like a group of sliders or some kind of modwheels??
I'm quite intrigued now

It's a Hohner that Waldorf had a part in designing, based on the DREAM chips that were also used in the Quasimidi products.

Re: Would you buy a PPG Wave if you had the opportunity for
There is one on ebay at the moment, I could probably grab that... if I could afford it.nvbrkr wrote:Would you buy a PPG Wave if you had the opportunity for it?
Personally, the answer is no.
If money wasn't an object, sure I'd grab one, or if I found one for say, 1 or 2k.
Always wanted one, but it falls into the "curiosity" realm as it were; would rather splunk stupid money on a Waldorf Wave before a PPG Wave; but maybe thats just me.
And for the wavetable thing:
DSI Poly Evolver
Jomox Sunsyn
Waldorf Microwave
