Are you glad synths aren't more popular?
Are you glad that synths aren't that popular? Part of me wishes they were, just so there will be a more competitive market, therefor hopefully creating better synths. But, then I like the fact that synths are behind the scene, compared to guitars, bass, and drums and what not. They are kind of a hidden gem. Sadly, you never see a chick say, "Oh, you play a synth?" that's hot.

Except for the late 70's early 80's they have never been more popular.

if only they hadn't invented presets.. with presets even the stupid norms can operate a synth
Re: Are you glad synths aren't more popular?
I'm just glad that the some of these synth manufacturers pumped out enough analog synths in the 80's (especially Roland) to make it possible to still pick something up like a Juno2 or a JX-8P for <$300 today.
My real wish is that synths are (falsely) proven to cause sterility and permature onset of Alzheimers and Tourrette's so I can pick up an EMS VCS3, an old Mini Moog, a JP8, an MS-20, and a Prophet5 for a couple of hundred bucks.

Just say that you play the piano.goober wrote:Sadly, you never see a chick say, "Oh, you play a synth?" that's hot.
Geez, novices.

I don't play the piano, I play/program synthesizers... and when explaining it to someone I almost always mention that.nvbrkr wrote:Just say that you play the piano.goober wrote:Sadly, you never see a chick say, "Oh, you play a synth?" that's hot.

Haha, when someone asks me if I play an instrument, I say I play the keyboard, I find it to be a nice middle ground between synth/piano haha..

Too bad they almost always suck...really, how many synths have you come across with more than few usable presets? Personally, I don't like to use too many presets, because I'd hate for someone who owns the same synth to think, "oh, they just used the 'Stargate' patch"...cartesia wrote:if only they hadn't invented presets.. with presets even the stupid norms can operate a synth
I think they reason synths don't have a whole lot of glamor has a lot to do with band member stereotypes than anything:
Singer: egotistic sex god
Guitarist: easy going, in it for the music not the money
Bassist: whiny, act like they've got something to prove
Keyboardist: pretenious and neurotic
Drummer: all muscle, no brain, and a bit overweight
Which one would you rather fit in to?

Oh boy, another whine about being a synth player thread.

I'll go with "fat, pretentious and neurotic". Synthesizers aren't really popular where I live. Culture isn't, either. I can't say that I would like lots of attention about synths but a bit more knowledge, coupled with more market competition and lower prices would be appreciated.
I also remember somebody asking for a new analog poly for under 250$. I'll have that as well.

Well, you have to remember if that was falsely proven loads of old synths would be thrown away...Yatmandu wrote:My real wish is that synths are (falsely) proven to cause sterility and permature onset of Alzheimers and Tourrette's so I can pick up an EMS VCS3, an old Mini Moog, a JP8, an MS-20, and a Prophet5 for a couple of hundred bucks.
A synthesizer will be for you what you want it to be...

When a chick asks me what instruments I say I just tell her:
I get drinks, chicks and money from playing WTF I like at the moment.

I usually boast to chicks about playing the jews harp. It's a real good cunnilingus workout device.
