Ronson's "Bang Bang Bang" - JMJ homage?

Post by knolan » Sun Jul 04, 2010 5:25 pm

I have to say that I think "Bang Bang Bang" by Mark Ronson and the Business International is a great, fun track. Very catchy and great to see synthesizers 'feature':

I didn't know about Mark Ronson prior to this, and reading about him (on wikipedia) shows him to be a diverse producer. I find this video/song an intriguing look back at the 80's - the synths, reference to John Mcenroe and so on. But what do you reckon - is this video infleunced by, or a kind of cheesey homage to Jean Michel Jarre? Certainly the white suit, clean cut and array of synths give me that impression but it doesn't seem like Ronson would have been infleunced by Jarre.

As an aside - what's the synth highest up at the front of the setup facing the camera.

As another aside - is the main chord riff actually played on a Juno 6?

Kevin.
It looks like the good 'ol Crumar Multiman, the original version from 1975.

This is weird, the aesthetic is kind of cool in parts but somethings not really quite right about it all
Moog LP + Casio SK1 and MT-75 + tube amp = good tone.

That's because as with all Mark ronson songs. It's not genuine. It's just a gimmick to sell records.

This song /video is definitely not serious music and may even be a gimmick to sell records (and I for one take music too seriusly a lot of the time) but I have to say - he's the one who got up off his butt to produce a cheesey/catchy tune using a synth; AND there's nothing wrong with wanting to sell records. Plus, as c**p as it actually is, I like it! More power to him I say.

True. Although I find him annoying it is a catchy enough tune.

Yeah you're right, he just comes off as a bit cheesy in a way that doesn't quite work for me.

You guys are harsh. Personally, I enjoy it more than some old Depeche Merde vids (Can't get enough-era). ;)

I realise what bothers me about the song. The 80s imagery clashes weirdly with the 90s sounds, particually the super 90s hip hop drums. I can't tell if it's intentional, but it's annoying and weird. The double time chorus sucks a*s. Q-Tip's parts are awesome. I still have the verse stuck in my head. The video is way way way cooler than the song. Mark Ronson is a bit of a failed hipster, the music just isn't really... hip.

sounds like someone trying too hard and missing the point. I don't feel any passion in this, just as other's have said, a bit of bandwagon jumping. There's some proper indie 'synth pop' that sounds more like the real deal and is done out of love of the era not just to sell records.

I don't mind Mark right now as he IS producing the new Duran Duran album, and it sounds like it will be a good un as they have gone back to their roots and Nick's using all the old analog synths. Aside from that, never like anything else Ronson has touched really.
