I'm pretty sure it's a Clavia Nord Lead, they use it on most of their tracks. It's one of their favorite synths along with the Yamaha DX7.

BTW, Underworld have a new album due out this September, it will be called "Barking".

I love Underworld, they have a unique sound and their albums always have a huge variety of styles while still retaining a consistent identity and atmosphere.

Doesnt the pad sound very JD-800?

Only listened through laptop speakers...

Certainly it's not what underworld used, but there's a preset on the microKORG that emulates exactly that sound. A16 - "Slippy Pad" - pretty close sound ;)

There's a well-known jd-800 sound used on that, which is included in this demo, along with the 'born slippy' theme at around 8:00 :

It's layered with something else, which may be a Nord Lead 1.

I think it might be the Clavia Nord Lead as well. Does anyone hear a phaser going through the mix?

Born Slippy was released in 1995, and early version were around in 1994.
So it cannot be the NordLead (which the still use to add spice to their live performances), which was out in 1995.

I guess you should look at early nineties synths.

the original version sounds completely different, but the "NUXX" version is the b-side. Original version here:

I don't remember exactly when I first heard it in '95, but it could very well be that Underworld made the NUXX version after they'd gotten hold of the Nord Lead (when in 1995 did it hit the market?)

isn't this track software based?

those chords are pretty easy to emulate in any decent VA.

i seem to recall underworld saying they used a yamaha cs1x on that track too. i think it was in futuremusic but it could have been sound on sound around '96.

I think they just used the cs1x & 2x as controllers.

Damn internets, erasing stuff.

Well, since this thread isn't buried like it was, I'll just re-answer.

The synth is a Waldorf Microwave. Rick Smith himself said as much during one of Underworld's internet broadcasts.
