Anybody remember Thomas Dolbys Casio AZ-1 controler? Looked like it had been pulled from the ashes after a nuclear war.
There may not be any ugly synths, but there sure are ugly women.

I rather liked Dolby's black AZ-1.
   this made my day.
i like the radias stabby, you caught her at a bad time. that just happens to be a rather un appealing unit-keyboard configuration.
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

Here's one from matrixsynth:

http://matrixsynth.blogspot.com/2010/08 ... sizer.html

Flat black on top, psychedelic on the front, and whose idea was it to put all the controls there?
Switches, knobs, buttons, LEDs, LCD screens, monitors, keys, mice, jacks, sockets. Now two joysticks!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think it looks hot. Controls are on the front of synths that were designed to sit on top of an organ, mainly preset synths.

Okay, it's hideous, but I like it.

A parallel: How many times have you been in a synth store and listened to some fumble-fingered f**k-tard abusing a synth with some lame riffs and saying: "This thing sound like s**t!"

Besides. You young kids are just not yet horny enough. When you're hungry, everything looks like a steak.

This one is so ugly that I refuse to even test it:

(Dave Smith should hire a designer one day)

That's just like a microQ, something about that layout makes me incredibly adverse to using it. I'm sure it's intuitive once you learn it.

edit - no seriously that's JUST like the microQ, from the blue color scheme to the rounded corners on the graphic print, to the giant oval motif in the "background" of the front panel. Makes me think the designer of the two front panels was the same person.

There are definitely ugly women. There are, however, no ugly redheads.

Agreed that it's ugly, but you have to remember that when it was designed there were no affordable analogue synths on the market at all. It packs so much into such a small package at such a low price, and one reason they could do that was because they didn't need to pay a graphic designer to make it pretty. Also there was no competition in the market so people wouldn't decide one way or the other based on looks.

It's a pity it's ugly though, cause it holds some people back from discovering what an amazing synth it is.

For me, it's got to be the Yamaha YS200
Duncan J. White + quite a few synths
