WHATEVER...

Post by JohnTron » Sat Sep 18, 2010 12:36 am

EDIT: Half of you want to set the "hypothetical" limit at $500 instead...very well. What 5 oldschool synths, each under say $500, would you assemble for the most elite and well-rounded setup?

Here's mine as of right now:

Korg Sigma
Akai AX80
Roland D50
Yamaha TG77
Oberheim DMX

yup...

$5000 worth of synths is "budget?" Make it under $500 apiece and then we're talking.

Yeah I'd hardly consider a Pro-One 'budget'.

  • Roland SH-2
  • E-mu EMAX
  • Yamaha DX7IID
  • Waldorf MicroWave
  • Roland JD-990
That should average to about $500 each, and I'd have fun.

Given the OP mentioned a Yammy SY, I considered the early 90s "vintage enough."

cheers,
Ian

I'd Call That a Bargain...

Post by JohnTron » Sat Sep 18, 2010 2:14 am

What 5 Budget Synths would you assemble for under $1000 TOTAL to give you the best sound. Drum Machines included.

This post is for the folks who didn't want to discuss my prior topic simply because of the way it was worded. They'd rather make comments as to why my previous topic wasn't stated "correct" enough to respond to. That's okay, respond to this one instead...it should suit you nicely, or at least a little more "accurately" than the last.

On a different note...

I will try harder not to continually disappoint folks on here with my inability to phrase questions better. What can I say? I am hungry for knowledge!!! I'm sometimes a tad impatient when delivering my ideas and it leads us more to semantic argument than anyone actually learning something in the process...These comments are in no way an attack on anyone who patronizes this site, just an observation of my own behavior and others'.

Is it to much to ask that we at least make an effort to help each other out from now on, offer advice, encouragement, CONSTRUCTIVE criticisms, rather than just s**t all over other people's posts? If someone is misguided or incorrect, help them see it, but being overly critical of others doesn't help them. Such simple acts of kindness might improve things on here for everyone. I should know, I was banned for a month without warning for letting a moderator have it. He was wrong, I was wrong, we had our fun, but no more. Think about it...

$5000 may be a bit of an over-exaggeration...$3000 perhaps. In any case, you're right. That's not really budget, but no worries mate, there's another topic up now for bargain synths.

Around $500? I'd suggest:

SCI Prophet 600 (for mono/unison/poly analog needs)
Roland SH-x (your choice of model) (alternate mono analog )
Yamaha SY77 (anything FM)
Korg 01wfd (nice strings, passable piano, drum sounds, brass
Roland JD800 (for filling in the cracks that the 01wfd missed)

arp odyssey, tb303, tr909, jx-8p.
ironically, depending on the deal you get that group can either be on budget, or way over budget. it took more than the budget for me to get them, probably because i bought more recently, but i don't regret a single cent. theoretically you could go with immitations and save alot of cash to bring it to the right amount, but the hypothesis is one monosynth, one acid squelchy box, one drum machine, and one polysynth. some are vco, some dco, the 909 has analog and samples, and the jx has midi and can be a midi keyboard. replace items to taste & budget. the909 and 303 can trigger eachother, the jx can be sequenced with midi from an external source (throw an msq-100 in for like $100) and you can either play the arp odyssey, or if you want to sequence it hook it up via cv/gate to the 303. and all can be run through the odyssey's ext audio input for added texture. 8-)
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

I'm not being a smart-a*s at all, but can you tell me where to find a P 600 for around $500? If so, I'd buy it tonight...seriously.

Also I've seen no mention of the JP8000...it is a pretty well-rounded synth to be had for under $500. h**l I've seen them go for less than $300...one of them to me! I second the SCI Six-Trak as well, a very versatile machine for under $500.

MEK | SixTrak | DrumTraks | Motif 8 | DW8000 | MicroKorg | EMX1 & ESX1 | Soviet TOM | Arp Quartet | SD-1 32V | Elka 490 | Indigo 2 | E6400 | Morpheus | SQ2 | DotCom Modular

I'd say take your pick of any 5 synths in my sig (have or gone, aside from M1 which I hate) that add up to the budget total, none of those synths cost ME more than £150 so you could get quite a few (at the time I bought them at least) for that budget.

AX80 is a favourite of mine .. NO! Not just because of the 'nice' display, for me with my 'cheaper' hardware synths the AX80 and P6 have the best overall tone/character that alludes to something more expensive (that I wouldn't spend my own hard earned on). And the 3P is a shining little beauty once you get to know it.

The rest would be racks for now as I try to quash my keyboard count (and think about modding my 'spare' polysix into a rack, maybe even the 3P as I don't trust the MKS-30  )

And the Juno2 makes a very nice/compact and useful master keyboard for rack synths (given as it's got Velocity and aftertouch unlike any other juno, or JX-3P and AX80 only has 'weird velocity' no AT), the main reason I keep it atm though I do like it's overal tone so the sounds are a bonus.
