Sooo I sold a bunch, and ended up buying an Alesis ion...

Post by Alex E » Sat Oct 23, 2010 3:38 am

I was going to save up for a Novation Ultranova... but I love knobs and love making my own sounds... And I had sold every knobby synth I owned. It just wasn't really sensible to downsize to something with only a few knobs and 37 keys. So I decided I would take the plunge and get something I always had an affinity for: an Alesis Ion. I read Jexus's review on his site, and that was a major factor in my purchase. But man, I first read that like 2 years ago... The ion's always been on my list.

The way Jexus put it:
"People will say that there are other VA synths that are better in this and that way... so let them say it, it may be true, but for me ION is the f**k best, most creative and flexible cheap VA. Not created by marketing heads for trance or electro or whatever consumers. It's a synthesizer created by synthesis designers, for synthesists. Generally for people who like to reflect on the diversity of this world."

Ah.. how perfect. I really couldn't ask for more. Can't wait to open that box from New York and dig in.
Also, AuctionSniper.com really works... just saying. ;)

Yeah I was never crazy about the micron... every time I try to make sounds with it I don't even know where to begin. T_T

Congrats! The Ion's a beast, you'll love it. The FM, sync, ring mod, and IMMENSE modulation capabilities (30+ sources and 70+ destinations  !) make this arguably the most powerful hardware VA. It's not perfect (low polyphony, disappointing effects, flat display, mediocre presets, non-upper echelon build quality), but you can't really argue with what it's capable of. It would take decades to exhaust the capabilities of this synth, I figure.

The Ion plus a good multi-effects unit are pretty much the VA panacea!

I looked at the Ion back when I was looking out for my first hardware synth, but I remember it wasn't easy to find, and prices were a bit high... so I looked at the micron, but in the end went for a microkorg! And eventually that was sold too.

I think the Ion is something to aspire too... for the time being I still have my AN1x for VA stuff, so can't complain!

That's probably the most modulation options on a VA short of the Korg Z1, which has 49 sources and 300+ destinations  but lacks the knobby interface.

Loved mine when I had it. Would love to get one again when the price right and I'm positive that it doesn't have the dreaded output issues.

Hey Ashe, have you tried the BCR-2000 yet? I seem to recall reading that it "plays nice" with the Micron pretty well.

Congrats - Enjoy! :)

One bit of advice I'd mention is to get a reverb unit for your Ion. I have an Ion and Micron and when I transfer sounds from the Ion into the Micron and then just add a bit of the Micron's onboard reverb it makes a world of difference.

Well I still have my Alesis wedge, and the reverb in my mixer too. I'll see how that sounds.

That's absolutely nutty! I can't even comprehend what all of the 49 possible sources could even be... :?: And as for the destinations, wow. I would assume that a whole bunch of those are for the physical modeling and effect parameters, and that the amount available to the VA system would have to be substantially less though, right?

But yeah, for a 1997 product, um, wow! :o

Congrats, Ion is a wonderful synth. +1, a nice reverb will be a very good addition.

No, keep waffling over geting a BCR or a Remote Zero... and i could use more than one BCR, too lol

Ah, ok. I scored a JX-8P from a guy in PA on Ebay over the weekend, and managed to find a BCR on Amazon. Apparently there must be a big run on them, because nearly every site was backordered until next month. h**l, even Amazon only had two left, one of which I was able to snag. Would've been cool to get an actual PG-800, but right now it seems kinda silly to pay more for the controller than for the synth, so we'll see how it works out.
