This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

The sound was made by a Moog Source live Roseland NYC.

Good programming is worth more than the most expensive synthesizer.

I believe that "Da Funk" by Daft Punk features an SH-101 through distortion for the lead synth.

No. Some say its an MS-20, others a Juno-106. I personally think its a 106 run through an Electro-Harmonics distortion pedal. I was able to get this sound almost perfect when i had a 106 a few years ago.

Ha ha, maybe this thread needs to be renamed "great tracks we thought were SH-101-driven"

How do inaccurate synth attributions occur?

Well, asside the Tobacco track, I'm pretty convinced that my original selection is accurate. Among them, Squarepusher and Boads of Canada have recognized to have heavily used this device, and I happen to think that those simple synth lines are somehow special... and I'm not the only one. I just think that [for some reasons] the 101 does simple things better than most other simple synths; cuts the mix just the right way and walks the thinn line between vintage and modern sound.

But there's portamento on it. Doesn't the 106 not have portamento? I've also heard it might be a ms-20, and I know daft punk used the 106 a lot but i swear ive gotten this sound on my 101...

Are you referring to the wow wow wowwowo lead line? Or the acid line mid-way through? The wow lead is just a slow attack, not portamento.

Yaz(oo)'s superb Nobody's Diary features a classy 101 lead melody. The genius Vince Clarke loved his 101 very much and you can hear it all over Yazoo's albums, especially Upstairs At Eric's. I used to own two of them and they were great. I had a Moog Rogue as well as programmed the SH's sequencer which played the Rogue: the SH's bass footage was 16" but the Rogue's was 32"......mmmmm bassy!

808 State had four 101s. You can hear them on tracks like Magical Dream, Ancodia, Cobra Bora and Pacific 202.
