Have you looked? I haven't been over there for years because they're not worth reading, but when the Boomchik was first announced there were a lot of very vocal people who were happy Roger was doing another MPC-style device. Even when the Adrenalinn came out they were hoping it would lead to another MPC-style device.griffin avid wrote:I find it hard to believe the MPC forums care. The older generation seems locked into the idea that the MPC 3000 [that one?] Is the open-ultimate and everything else is c**p.
The new generation seem split between soft heads (what Tekkentool was referencing) and the idea that AKAI is everything. Like it's the company or brand is key. I think the Linn who? effect is um...in effect.

Oh no sir! I do not mean to say that you are...um...lying.
I mean to say that's it's surprising....like I'm scratching my head.

Re: New DSI instrument!
The MPC 5000, all the sequencing and midi was based off the 3000, they did not change a thing. The 3000 came out in 1994...Numark isn't going to do much of anything but try to make money off the name. I would love a perfect hybrid between a MPC, Maschine, and what I have seen with the Temptest.griffin avid wrote: As far as I see it, AKAI seem like they are sitting back and begrudgingly adding new features. It's like they are being FORCED to update. When was the last time they were first in anything?

I think it's great there's a new drum box coming out, and I think this one is pretty novel, but I don't think you're giving them a fair (or realistic) comparison here.griffin avid wrote: The Machine drums (in my personal opinion) have three hurdles to get over.
1. Complicated knob-twiddling and overall complexity
2. Expensive
3. Doesn't really have a 'sound' just sound manipulation.
Where as the Tempest has obvious strengths...
1. Looks simple and obvious in appearance/layout.
2. Historical Pedigree
3. Analog Groove Box
The MnM/MD have one of the easiest interfaces out there. There's a single screen (and button to get there) for all primary sound parameters, and although the interface is deep, basic patch making is a doddle. And of course they have a "sound" (this is what most people seem to complain about: the machinedrum "sound"!) - there are a variety of bonefide drum synthesis types in the MDs which freely allow you to mimic the standard array of analog through digital drum sounds. Add sampling and the world's your oyster (something the Tempest can't currently do)...
As far as expense: the DSI product will be more than any MD goes for new.
And none of the features you mention for the Temptest are actual selling points per se... many knobs does not a simple interface make.
I'm not doubting this will fill in an obviously needed niche, but that doesn't mean it automatically is an improvement over the current competition (be it MPC or MD) if you are not solely interested in an "analog groove box".
Do you even post on vse bro?

Ah, I see what you mean now. There are a lot of people on those forums who don't like Akai/Numark and think they're doing a terrible job.griffin avid wrote:Oh no sir! I do not mean to say that you are...um...lying.

When you look at it the 60 and 3000 actually broke new ground and pushed the technology as far as was possible at the time, from then on (after RL's involvement) MPCs have pretty much been repackaging and updating the storage options, apart from the 5000 which was pretty much an Alesis Fusion rammed into an MPC case. The only one that really pushed things forward was the 4000, but then Akai discontinued that without offering anything better. I guess I'm going a little off topic now, but there is room in this sector for some innovation.

Re: New DSI instrument!
This is a really dumb question, and I probably already have the answer. Does Tempest include Simmons re-creations?

I'm sure he means those 'signature' sounds as patches/presets/kits.
