Quite - they sound very different. Crumby youtube vids don't have a good track record for revealing the subtleties and/or capabilities of any instrument, but having had DSI and Moog kit side by side, they occupy individual sonic territories, as well as different interactional ones. It's more a matter of personal taste than whether one will do what the other does.Blue Monster 65 wrote:both Moog and DSI sounds

Re: New DSI instrument!
Now that this thread is nearly a year old can a moderator change the title to "DSI Tempest" maybe?
With NAMM coming up again I keep seeing this and thinking it's another new DSI instrument.

Okay, after the success of Tempest, can anybody speculate what kind of instrument Dave Smith will design next? What about a virtual marimba or vibraphone that you play with mallets?sequentialsoftshock wrote:Me too! hahasoundxplorer wrote:Now that this thread is nearly a year old can a moderator change the title to "DSI Tempest" maybe?

It will be some kind of effects box thing...
I always wanted someone to make a mixing desk with built in analog effects, say moog or someone...
Or it will be a DSI guitar...
In fact Keytar...
Come on Bennett.... Let's Party!

A Keytar would compete with Roland, while a guitar would compete with Moog.kuroichi wrote:Speculation:MrFrodo wrote:Okay, after the success of Tempest, can anybody speculate what kind of instrument Dave Smith will design next? What about a virtual marimba or vibraphone that you play with mallets?

Re: New DSI instrument!
vco based synth would be nice. get rid of the extra features and instead focus on the pure tonality and build quality. it seems most dsi stuff has some issues so a product that's solid from start to finish would be wonderful. it can't be that hard can it?

I agree. If you want the classic "Moog" sound, you're not going to get it with anything from DSI. They occupy different sonic landscapes. Moog is buttery, smooth, warm. DSI is fizzy, in your face, a bit harsh. Both are very useful.nathanscribe wrote:Quite - they sound very different. Re: New DSI instrument!
Same goes for Oberheim models. Not the same as Moog or Sequential but just as good.

Re: New DSI instrument!
you know, i just opened up my OB 8 and there is barely anything in there and we are talking about a synth from 1983! there are about four core circuit boards ... all very tidy, and lot's of ic's. it cannot be that hard to manufacture a vco, vca, env, and vcf ic can it? i mean this is the 21st century. it doesn't have to be curtis or ssm but it could be built around a particular architecture, made smaller and the whole thing can fit in a much smaller case (ala prophet 08).Ashe37 wrote:... but it will never happen.matia wrote:vco based synth would be nice.

Which gives me the impression that the only reason most companies quit manufacturing those particular circuit boards is that they were "no longer all the rage." If it really makes that much of a difference, why don't you write Dave Smith yourself and ask about bringing back the VCOs?matia wrote: you know, i just opened up my OB 8 and there is barely anything in there and we are talking about a synth from 1983! there are about four core circuit boards ... all very tidy, and lot's of ic's. it cannot be that hard to manufacture a vco, vca, env, and vcf ic can it? i mean this is the 21st century. it doesn't have to be curtis or ssm but it could be built around a particular architecture, made smaller and the whole thing can fit in a much smaller case (ala prophet 08).

you know i'm too busy putting music out to bother with that but my tendency as a sociologist is a hard one to overwrite after all the schoolingMrFrodo wrote:Which gives me the impression that the only reason most companies quit manufacturing those particular circuit boards is that they were "no longer all the rage." Re: New DSI instrument!
My Minimoog Voyager's oscillators only need a little fine tuning once in a while, then they're dead on. If they can make it work on the Voyager and LP, then "Rave and Dodger" could make it work on one of their collaborations.

Maybe get a degree in Electronic Engineering instead and you can understand the costs of R&D, etc, instead of simply musing from your behind.matia wrote:
