Synthi still made?

The EMS website is pretty old but there is still an address to write if you want to place an order. Does anyone know anything about this? I find it hard to believe that they are still made new at that price while the ebayers are paying $10k for them. Has anyone had any luck placing an order? I assume there is a LONG wait time.

Last I heard was about four or five years ago there was a four-year waiting list. Who knows, who knows.

When we interviewed Robin Wood for What the Future Sounded Like a few years back he mentioned only having a couple of the cases left for the Synthis. Going from people who've been on the waiting list since the Dawn of Time, it doesn't seem that there's a great deal happening.

Actually, after a huge wait, it sounds like he is getting very near to starting production again. Basically, I think anyone who was on the list had the option of paying in to be in line for the actual thing this time, and others had the chance to join. This was last year sometime, and that list is undoubtedly super long (again). On the other hand, I think the selling price was pretty $$$ (at least $4k from what I recall), so who knows how many people are actually lined up for one. Best to email if you're interested I would imagine.

Apparently, 2011 is the year when it's all going to get rolling. But I think that's happened a few times now already.

edit: Oops, beat me to it.

4 year waiting list!!? There could be a new president by then. He/she could be a dictator. We could be living in a regime that doesn't allow for Synthis. I think I'd rather get my hands on one before that happens!

Turn that frown into a smile :) the dictator might instead require each and every one of us to have a Synthi 8-)

More likely. Americans will be required to buy Synthis - those who cannot afford one will be given a generic model designed by the department of defense.

I hope they do start making them again, the dude who cloned the board and had the PCB up for sale so you could make your own for about $1500 took it down, due to their being the option of buying new ones still.

Wow, what an ugly, poorly constructed sentence. :(

I have a lot of respect for Robin and EMS synths but I don't get why they can't give updates on what the h**l is going on?

I'd be pretty pissed if I was waiting 4+ years with no real word, on not only when It'll be ready but *if* it will at all.

I think as a business it's unfair to ask that of their customers, they either need to get more workers on board and make a proper go of it or make it official that there will not be any more made.

Maybe we should organize and write him and see what's up? If I got 100 emails all at once asking me what the h**l was up I would get the message. And my response might be something like "sitting in my underwear drinking coffee writing on a vintage synthesizer forum". Regardless of the mundanity of my response at least the public would be informed.

No, but seriously maybe we should all formulate a group email and send it to him.

Got an email from Robin:

Thank you for your enquiry and apologies for the delay in replying.

It has taken far longer than we expected to finally restart production of the
original Synthi A and VCS3 and we can only ask for forgiveness from potential
customers who have been kept waiting. The first batch of Synthi As is now
assembled and awaiting final test and indications are that we will start
shipping these in March.

Unfortunately we only have enough of the original Synthi A cases for 40 units,
and when these are all used-up we intend to redesign this product. Inevitably it
will change into something a bit different, but we have every intention of
continuing with a compact portable analogue instrument.

In contrast the wooden cabinets for the VCS3 can still be made and we currently
have 30 ready for use in production. So we are hoping to continue to make this
available in its original form for several more years yet.

Please note that although we are not currently offering any keyboards for sale
(KS or DK2), we are expecting to make the mechanical keyboard DK2 available
again shortly after Synthi production has settled into a rhythm. Beyond this we
have many plans for other products including a variant of the KS touch-keyboard
sequencer.

Many would-be customers have been waiting for several years for production to
restart, and we have been operating a waiting list system. The waiting list for
the Synthi A is already over-subscribed by double the number of available cases.
But people are still joining in the hope that enough of the long-term waiters
will have dropped out when we re-establish contact with them. Deposits for
Synthi As are now only accepted on the understanding that there is an
increasingly slim chance that one of the last original Synthi As will be
available to purchase. The separate waiting list for VCS3s remains open.

At the moment we are quoting a notional lead-time of 18 months for Synthi As and
VCS3s, although once we start delivering completed units we should be able to be
a bit more specific. Prices are 3000.00 GBP for the Synthi A and 3200.00 for the
VCS3 (excluding 20% VAT - if you live in the EEC).

If you want to join the waiting list we just need a deposit in the form of a
personal cheque (NOT a bank draft), made out to EMS and mailed to the above
address, for the equivalent of 150.00 GB pounds (USD or euros accepted). We will
NOT attempt to bank or cash deposit cheques and at any time you can request its
return, for example if you managed to find a used Synthi on ebay or elsewhere.
To keep track of progress you are always welcome to email for an update.

The Synthis we are making are to the original 1971 Mk2 design using the original
components. The only changes we have made in the current series are:

1) Oscillator stabilisation to Osc1 and Osc2. This has no effect on the timbre
of the oscillators.
2) A reverb spring unit from a different manufacturer.

Various modifications may be also added - a list is available on request.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Best wishes - Robin Wood

Ahh nice a redesigned Synthi A, that could be awesome depending on the design, a more modern but still tasteful looking Synthi A would be great, hopefully something to give the cashed up eBay buyers a nice boot up the rear. :D

What's the website for this? The only one I can find has nothing on selling units.

Can't wait til the new ones come out so people start talking about how they're not as fat as the old ones.
