Agreed. I'd say if we cut down our expectations to the lowest possible standard then there will be at least no disappointment in a week. Possibly no excitement either...

I think it's based on the same technology as the V-Piano. If they can model the complex behavior of a piano, it would be possible to model correctly an analog synth. My guess it has an analog model engine, mixed with some other existing Roland technology, the ARX01 drums, ARx-02 electric pianos and the ARX03 brass. They probably has also added string and voice modeling.

This would explain the saxophone, violin, voice, etc.

how does the ability to model a piano have anything to do with modeling an analog synth?

Modeling analog synths was done long before anyone managed to do a good piano emulation.

If Roland manages to model brass, piano, voice, electric piano, etc what does this not have to do with modeling an analog synth? By measuring real world sounds a mathematical model is created that reacts in a similar way. If Roland managed to create a piano good enough for professional players, I think they have the capacity to also create a convincing analog model. That they have until now decided to base all their VAs on the same old JP8000 code-base is their own decision.

Looking at the acoustic instruments in that vid, maybe it has some kind of resynthesis engine?
(That might be cool.)

from the above article: "realism with absolutely no compromise"

didn't Korg say that about the M1 20-odd yrs ago when that came out?
what on earth is the goal here, besides 'buy a new keyboard'?

Using keyboards to imitate acoustic instruments has a built-in difficulty in that keyboard players like to play with two hands all the time. And all you can get with that (equal-tempered) keyboard is note, vel & aftertouch. So that leaves the feet/nose/ballhair to manage for every other particular expression for every conceivable emulation.
Herein lies the folly: it makes little difference how "realistic" your modeling code is... if it still being played the same as an M1+D-beam or whatever. A wind-controller offers some 'closing of the gap' but that is one solution for all winds/reeds/brass so still the same problem, albeit to an only slightly lesser degree.
Am I wrong??

Surprised ? No , not really .
This being VSE people want well ....vintage like synths no ?
I think we forget though the purpose they had in mind though when they build these " classics" .
Purpose; to Emulate . Back in the day that was analog today it's samples and dsp .
I'm not at all surprised it's closer too a workstation than a basic subtractive poly .
Some wish to leave their mark ... I want to leave a scar .

Couldn't they at least make it pretty? This might be the beer talking, but I am seriously going to puke. Abomination-80. My face is melting.

Get your heads out of your a$$es Roland devs! Your legacy deserves better.

No more Roland for this warlock.

Winning!

I never liked the original Jupiter-8 colors either...

A great man once said something along the lines of, and I paraphrase: "Synthesizers shouldn't be made to recreate or replace old sounds, they should be used to create new sounds."

What was his name? It's bugging me that I can't remember.

Oh! Right! It was Dr. Robert Moog.

*Hugs Voyager, gives Little Phatty a pat on the head.*

Speaking of Moog, anyone who EVER said the slightest thing about Moog naming the Voyager the "Minimoog Voyager" and spent the better part of the last decade complaining how it shouldn't have been called the Minimoog because it wasn't an exact replica of the Model D that they once played in a music shop in the early 80's should have a field day with this thing.

At least you can't fault them for the tagline "Metamorphis of a Legend," since it's fairly accurate. They did exactly what it says, took a legend and turned it into something completely different.
