Favorite analog drum machines
Pardon me if there is a thread about this already, but I didn't see one in the search results...
I'm looking for a top 10 or top 20 list of favorite analog drum machines (old and new), excluding the 808/909. I'm particularly curious about opinions towards non-programmable preset vintage drum machines like the MiniPops and CR-68, and also the lack of midi on units like the 606 and DR-55 (excluding midi mods--just using it as is).

Re: Best analog drum machines
Proper drum machines or any analog drum synth?
If the latter, then Simmons SDSV, MAM ADX-1, Vermona DRM-1, and Tama TechStar modules are great.
For proper drum machines, you really can't beat the TR-606 even with its lack of MIDI. It's still easy to sync with a MIDI rig with a MIDI to Sync24 converter. They're so hand because they can run off batteries and have 2 trigger outs. The Boss DR-110 sounds great, too, but might be a bit harder to incorporate into a MIDI system without modifications.
The CR-78 sounds great, but is a bugger to program. I'm wanting to get Kenton's Pro-KADI installed on mine to trigger its sounds.
I'd also like to do that to one of my Korg KR-55.
The Korg KPR-77 is programmable, but has a learning curve. The sounds are OK, but don't punch like the 606.
I'm impressed with what I've seen/heard online of the Acidlab M1AM1 and MFB boxes, but I've already got an 808.
Of course, there's DSI's Tempest coming out in a few months for $2K!
That's all I can think of right now.

Re: Favorite analog drum machines
I guess both proper drum machines and analog drum sound modules too. I mean if the sound module is really great, then it would be worth getting another machine just to trigger it, right?
Side note: I got to hear a DR-55 for the first time last week and really loved the sound (after running it through a little reverb) and the price. I kind of liked the limitations and easy programming. The simplicity is quite elegant.

I know by looking at it, that the DSI Tempest is going to be my favorite drumm-machine ever.

Re: Favorite analog drum machines
My MPC (not akai) analog drum machine.....It has 8 pads and you can program many parameters.
It sounds amazing and has it's unique sound...Better than the 808 for fullness.
Many have become extinct because of battery damage (AKA polysix but worse)
I have restored mine....Wonderful machine and i take it live.

Damn I don't even see any YouTube videos of that. There must have been only like 10 ever made.Automatic Gainsay wrote:Thomas Bandmaster

Yeah, the Tempest looks pretty powerful. Too bad it's so expensive.
By MPC, did you mean this one?
