"The Beautiful Ones"
Ever since I was seventeen and got my own copy of the Prince soundtrack Purple Rain, Ive been fascinated at how he got some of the porta sounds on "The Beautiful Ones." (I'm assuming he got them from his Oberheim model(s).) Does anybody have any helpful tips as to his patch settings for that song? Could a semblance be created using a Roland PG-800? I know; the Jx synths aren't like Oberheim OB's, but I bet one could come up with a similar sound.

Re: "The Beautiful Ones"
why would you 'need' a pg-800 to do it on an 8P (if even possible), you can fully edit the synth from software, generic box, or the synth itself, there's no magic sound by plugging in the '800.

Maybe not, but the 800 makes it simple and immediate.

That's the Oherheim OB-8 making those portamento string sounds sliding down from nowhere. It's a function within the Page-2 feature set. Pretty sure Prince had to multi-track it to get all the parts down, but regardless, you're hearing the OB-8 in all its glory.

Living under my rock (in New York), I don't know if there's a softsynth emulation of the Ob series. Is there one?

Re: "The Beautiful Ones"
No there currently isn't, but you can make that sound in any softsynth. It's just sawtooths detuned with LFO pitch mod. Have the the OSC frequency track an assignable EG that triggers with key-on

I thought he was using the OB-x on that album, at least he was in the movie. I love that song, my personal favorite from that album.

If it was the OB-Xa, it's hard to distinguish from the 8.

I'm a hardware guy, but there are some software synths imo, that can make you forget about hardware and stay in the box.
A few, Omnisphere(my island synth), Oddity, MiniMonsta, and OP-X Pro II.

Didn't know that was possible. Always figured you're forced to assimilate there or you don't survive.MrFrodo wrote:Living under my rock (in New York)
