Just a fun little guess the synth clip

Post by hfinn » Wed Mar 23, 2011 1:22 am

Here is a clip that I found in the archives. I'm not giving any hints as to what it is to see where the guessing goes. I will give more hints as time goes on if no one gets it right away. Only effect added was a little reverb.

ms-20, mono-poly, sh-101, sh-2? ? ? ? or maybe a free synthedit synth? ;) actually the filter sounds a tad 'digital' to me so perhaps a VA. I'll settle on "a synth released between 1977 and 2007"

You didn't say could only have 1 guess. and my ears are tired right now.

It's a CS-10 or 15 or one of the other lower CS range.

That was my first thought too - the more 'open filter' parts and the modulation at the end suggested it.

It might be another DX or even SY but I'd bet one of my old scarves it's an FM synth.

Threads like this always confirm to me that people actually can't tell the difference between various classic synths enough to warrant the hype and arguements they cause.
It's a good thing. ha!

yeah, for really basic sounds like this I don't think it really matters that much what synth you use.

I personally would probably go to zebra 2 for this sound, but I know that isn't what this is (as I don't think zebra is in the database)... I'm gonna guess ESQ-1, just because I could get that tone out of my SQ80 back when I had one really easily.

The sound itself wasn't meant to be anything ground breaking. But it is interesting to see as mentioned how many kinds of synths can overlap in general. A hint I will give us that this not a FM synth and it can get FAR more insane sounding if I wanted it to. This is a kind of sound not usually attributed to what kind of synth made it.

Oh well, I blame my failure on the fact I'm using crappy computer speakers. Ahem.

Knowing you Heath it could be anything from a Casio VL-1 to Buchla's trouserpress.

We have a winner. Buchla 200e. All the sound came right from the 261e oscillator.
