Just you and a synth and a bottle o' rum

Post by gridsleep » Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:55 am

In a possibly brain dead attempt to get an idea of what the best-of-all-worlds synthesizer is, if you were cast away on a desert island (which is to say an island that is deserted [no Man Friday or Tropic Solutions girls, you cheeky monkeys,] not an island with no fresh water) and which also had at least one palm tree with a mysterious mains outlet (if you can run an alarm clock using a potato, why hasn't someone come up with an emergency device that you can screw into a tree to get electricity from the photosynthesis? has anyone even been looking into this?), and you found yourself with only one synthesizer as your boon companion, which synthesizer would it be, and why? Ignore the need for amps or monitors or headgear, we'll assume they were in the kit with the synthesizer, although if you wish to specify such accoutrements, you may extrapolate at will. (I could have specified a prison scenario, I suppose, more realistic, or maybe duty in a nuclear submarine, but they are each rather grim and have other issues, whereas the desert island is always more fanciful and romantic and Keira Knightly could always show up.)

I'm having a very tough time deciding at all among my synthesizers. Mainly I think I'm looking for a different way to look at synthesizers I don't already have, to see if there are any that would bring something new to my stable. I live in a small town in a rural area, and can't pop down to the music super store to try out all the latest and greatest.
Nymph, in thy orisons be all my synths remembered.

I dont know...Maybe a Mini Moog. But I´m also a piano player. I need some s**t with great piano sound as well.
Maybe a Korg Oasys. I know that there are many who dislike these workstation synths but I don´t give a s**t about that...
But I would definitely prefer Keira Knightley before any synth in the world... :D

This thread has been done before (last 6 months?)

My get-off is making new sounds, not songs so I'd want:
Yamaha SY-99
Roland JD-800
Kurz. 25, 2600
Maybe Kawai K5000s
Some kinda soft-synth that allows you to draw waves, envelopes etc.

Prob. the Kurzweil.

The officially correct answer is CS-80, to paddle for freedom in the lid. I believe that was the consensus the first time this thread appeared in 2003.

Will this turn into a thread about booze?

Can I have gin instead of rum? I love meself a lukewarm pint of gin. f**k the tonic, ruins the taste.
