Favorite Drum Machine Beat/Pattern

Post by tomorrowstops » Sun Aug 07, 2011 2:28 pm

Hey guys, I've started to mess around with the drum machine concept again. Its refreshing to write music against patterns that are rock solid timing wise, and my wife is appreciating the break from hearing my real kit every day!

Whats favorite beat you've ever heard in a piece of music (any genre). It could be the beat itself you like, the sound, or the combination of both that does it for you!

I'm still thinking of what my favorite could be, but one that pops straight into my head would be the beat from MJ's 'Wanna Be Startin Somethin' - the beat is nasty and that linndrum (right?) just has that magic charm!

starting at 4:12!
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

I've always liked Butch Vig's drum work and loops from early Garbage recordings, especially no.1 crush. DJ Shadow's Endtroducing, the loops he found, the way the loops came out of the MPC-60 sounding great and stutter. MJ's Beat It, and the way Felix da Housecat worked that groove into a few of his remixes. FSOL has some monster drums in their tracks, especially Slider. Telefon Tel Aviv re-invented the drum machine vibe for me with very intricate and evolving sequences, and the way they have the confidence to slow down the BPMs to near-stop with tracks like Bubble and Spike. Who could forget NIN's super-compressed Closer.

For me, it's got to be Enigma's Sadeness:

That drum pattern marked an entire subgenre in the early 90's.

Still haven't got a clue on how it was made. Roland R-8, perhaps? Anyone?

Sampled from Soul 2 Soul (Cretu sampled pretty much all the drum beat used in Enigma's stuff)

The original beat sounds like TR-909 to me.

While we're on the subject of Cretu's sampled beats, I've always liked this (original) beat:

Nothin' like a smooth, syncopated 808 beat:

Theres definitely a 909 in there, plus some other layered sounds too, on the snare etc...

Heres one thats been in my head lately, theres too many for me to pick a favourite:

It's essentially just situation hot by Arabian Prince, with a tuned bassdrum.

So many to choose from and hard to name a definate favourite, but I have always loved the beat on Joyce Sims' "Come Into My Life". I believe the drums were programmed by Mantronik, he's also credited as producer.

Good bassline, and of course great vocals! She really can sing, unlike the nasal congested, strained foghorn, baby-like, auto-tuned, so-called voices I hear on the charts today.

Both of those are great tunes w/ high production value.

The Cherelle track is amazing and has that "signature" Jam/Lewis sound.

Wow, thank you Z. I would've never suspected Soul II Soul was the original version.

Another example, here is an absolute fave of mine when it comes to 808 beats/programming:
