I'm curious too. Maybe a Yamaha DX-something or a Roland JX-something?

That first one sounds like it is layered with a pitch effect.

Try sampling a chord played on an alpha Juno "Hoover" style patch, and then mapping it to a keyboard and playing a simple tune with it. Or first try mapping a chord played on any old patch just to see how it effects the way the notes sound
This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

+1

yeah try sampling different synth chords and playing them roughly on the keyboard, should get into that territory pretty soon.

Roland JX8P could do this really easily.
MU Modular (Moog, Dotcom, STG, Analog Systems, and Moon modules), MS20 (x2), Microbrute, Electribes (EA-1, EMX), microKorg, AN1x, Nord Lead 2x, Blofeld, Alpha Juno 2, DX7, JX8P, Poly 61 (x2), Split 8, TR-505, Monotron Delay, Ace Tone FR-3, Paia Fatman

Isn't it the "chord memory" function of Alpha Juno/MKS-50 that popularized this sound in the late 80ies? Let's you play one-finger chords. Sampling chords will get you there as well, of course.

That would be one of the most used "stab" samples in the history of house music. I think you can find it in the Emu Orbit soundset, otherwise, find a "classic house stabs" sample library somewhere online and it'll be in there.

My guess it's originally sampled from a record, maybe no synths involved.

Here it is again, as used by Armando (R.I.P.)

Cheers,
Allert

I think the earliest use of that sound was Black Riot – A Day In The Life (Todd Terry).

Earliest I could trace anyway.
MPC-4000, Jupiter 6, Pro-One, MS-10, Arp Axxe, Ensoniq VFX, MKS-30 + PG200, (Casio VL Tone, Drumtrax, R5, DR-110...)

A well-used technique in SoundTracker days of yore. I've probably still got the sample files somewhere, buried deep in a pile of Amiga floppies.

The stab from 0:42 onwards in the second video is a Nitro Deluxe sample I believe.

Gawd I hate the Hoover sound. :x

But thanks for taking me down a memory lane (where I often opt to take a detour). ;)

Welcome to 1996. ;)

Preset's called "Igor Circus" on the SR-JV80-11 expansion but of course it's probably inspired by/sampled from another source. Turns out there's a Circus Polka by Igor Stravinsky and since sampling from classical music has a pretty good precedent, perhaps it's taken from there?

This isn't the hover sound though, the hover sound is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_sound

Black Riot – A Day In The Life used this sound in 1988, so of course it was years before any JV rehashed it.

Doesn't sound like any orchestra hit to me, sounds like a synth or synths.

And i think it sounds like a very short sample of an old recording of a horn section.
