Things you've bought in a car boot sale/ garage sale

Post by andrew13 » Mon Oct 10, 2011 10:16 am

Yeah, just wondering if anybody's found any interesting finds at a car boot sale/ garage sale like an old Roland synth or abit of analogue outboard gear etc
M-Audio oxygen 49, Microkorg, Alesis Micron.
I only wish I could own a Clavia Nord lead 2.

I got a Jen Superstringer in the most unlikely, small and isolated beachfront country town for $10 :D

I think that's still to date my best deal ever, just because no one else there at the auction wanted it. 8-)

When I was young and poor, I got my 1967 Hofner Beatle Bass at a yard sale for $40.00. The guy wanted $50 but I talked him down because I had exactly $50.00 in my wallet to last me until pay day. I managed to eat for 4 days or so on $10.00 but it was worth it.

At garage sales I rarely see anything interesting as it's mostly baby clothes and worthless knick-knacks.

Estate sales and property auctions are a better bet, but around here nothing turns up but tools, antiques, and occasionally firearms. Around here you've really got to be full-time to come up with the occasional musical instrument and even then it's not any cool synth stuff.

I've had better luck at thrift stores: old non-working organs, sometimes midi controllers, vintage stereos and retro computer equipment are the catch of the day occasionally. The coolest thing I've turned up was an old but fully working DBX Model 128 Compressor/Expander/Noise-Reduction. The dynamics on it are really funky.

I've bought an older Yamaha electone analog organ that was pretty sweet. It had a great analog rhythm section and a simple filter section with a waveform selection going on. Had a built in Leslie too. I also bought a CZ-5000 for $27 at the same thrift store, also a casio sk-1. I consistently buy old funk and disco vinyl from this particular store as well at 50 cents a pop. I found a vl-1 at a thrift store in Florida but it sucked and I literally sold it to a hipster with a fanny pack a few months later for a profit.

This looks like a psychotropic reaction. No wonder it's so popular...

The other day I found a big Allen and Heath mixer for sale at a thrift store for full value. I could probably find one somewhere else in better condition for a little bit less. Many thrift stores in Pasadena also have old organs but I have no interest in them.

I found a Yamaha CS01, a beat up Roland Juno-106, a Casio SK-1, and tons of portatones at my high school. Also found a minty Univox Univibe! Bought it all with lots of help from my principal for a few bucks and never looked back. I don't have any of that stuff anymore, but it was a great find.

Nothing amazing, but I did get a CS-01 from Cash Converters for 25GBP. I kept it ten years and sold it for over 500 percent profit. Win!

When I visit these things I'm always dreaming I'll find a 303 or 101 sold as a kids toy for £10. 303s especially could be easily put up for a small price by the older folks of a dead musician son.. (hey a man can dream) Of course if I did find a 303 for that price (or any decent price) I'd buy it and list it on ebay for the usual > £1000 and feel very content :)

So far not found any cool analog gear, the only 2 keyboard related things were a Yamah SHS-10 and it's bigger brother the SHS-200 - both mini key keytars that are way overated (on ebay) and sell for silly money, I paid my £15 total for these items and handily made over £300 on ebay from them combined.

This summer I lucked into an EHX Memory Man Deluxe for $5 US. It was the original version from the 80s. I didn't know what it was when I bought it, but I figured it would be worth the buying just to play around. Once I got it home and ran my synths through it I knew I had struck gold.

I also found a 3-tier Ultimate Supports A-frame keyboard stand for $7. I had no need for it, but I bought it for another synth friend in town. Now he needs to buy more synths to fill it.

Gibson Flying V $175, Wurlitzer 200a $40, vintage Gibson hollow body cases $20 a piece, SCI 6 track with original packaging $150.

This no name tube amp with about an eight inch speaker, greatest tone ever.

I've had great luck with old tape machines. I found a perfect condition Uher 4400 field recorder for $5 and a my Akai GXC-310d which is the best sounding cassette player I've heard for $10.
I'm yet to find an AKS amongst a pile of old suitcases though. :)

Edit: Ah c**p, I didn't realise I was zombifying this thread. Woops!

I've bought my CS-80 at garage sale for 50$, a bit of lucky. People who sold it said it's been left by a previous homeowner, they found it on the attic.

An ARP Axxe for $7.90. It wasn't working very well when bought though. It cost me the price of one entire 2N5172 transistor to get it fixed too...
