just purcahsed a Roland 707 on monday.

not only is it an instant machine with a groove, but a very close impression to the Linn LM1.
it sits in the mix well, with a little tinkering.

but to get ideas written down quick, you cant go wrong with this baby.

is there any other equipment you could mention that enables such easy workflow.

My JD-800 is usually the first synth I power on in my rig and start tweaking to my current mood.

i think this may be because it was my first synth, but my korg poly 800 always is easy to use and write on. mine has the filter and "fm" knobs, but even without them, i can still write easily. it was the same way with my dw-8000. with too many knobs i actually sometimes get distracted, and when im using software i usually just assign a few knobs on my controller to filter or other parameters.
for me, keeping it simple is better than having alot of knobs.
but to answer your question, the older korgs are really easy to use

God yes I'll hop on that bandwagon right away.
There's something about loading up piano samples or Rhodes plugin (like Mr Ray) that get the good vibes going.
And especially a good old stringer that uses BBD chips.

I like the kind of equipment that makes noises when you touch it.

:D

But in all seriousness besides the awesome drum machine already mentioned, all those fancy knobular analog synths are awesome at being just that.

Your right...for a long time the TR707 was my goto drum machine....because it was so quick and easy to get a groove going. Run the individual outs into some nice outboard and your good to go. I tried to get to grips with Stylus and although I respect it for being increadibly versatile and powerful...I found it totally got in the way of knocking out quick grooves. I know its because im still quite nooby...but it highlights the importance of using gear that not only sounds good...but is pitched at the right level so you can actually use the bloody thing.

I used to use the 707 with a ProOne, Prophet 5, Jupiter 8 and Juno 60. Nice simple set up. My workflow slowed right down when I moved over to a DX7 and D50. Access Virus is ok....if you use it as a simple synth.

Any synth without patch memory.

That makes me start fresh every time and not just play stuff via presets. Which is a current problem with me and the VS. It has so many great sounds that I don't tweak it enough.
