Im heading to Germany, recommend some shops/venues plz

In October, we're starting in Berlin then heading south towards the Alps..
Just heading there for a holiday with the lady but keen to nick off here and there to cream myself over the some good tunes/gear.

Is there still a big scene there?

I'm not big on pounding techno in supersize clubs, just kinda keen to check out some local gigs, any venues you could recommend I check out?

Since it's the home of several synth companies - I assume there must be some good shops to check out?

Schneider's Buero is definitely worth a look.
Hard wax and Space Halle are good record shops. There is usually loads of music on so it's a good idea just to grab the local entertainment magazine (zitty i think, kind of like time out) and check what's happening.

It's a shame you're not going a couple of months earlier, it's really nice there in the summer.

There is a lot of electronic music there. You'll see fliers and cards advertising pretty much anything you want, art and music-wise and they will be all over the place. The last time I was there I oculdn't visit the bathroom without passing a table full of fliers. Most of them were touristy things but there were always some cool looking music acts being touted.

For non-synth action, check out the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin and the Egyptian Museum.

KaDeWe is also pretty cool if you like shopping. It's the largest department store in Europe.

I have fond memories of Berlin. My son spoke his first words in both English and German during a visit there.

We saw here there but didn't have a camera handy. A couple of months later one of my friends came back with a picture of her.


It may be hard to see in this pic but she's wearing a sheep mask. She'd be very popular in these parts...

Hanging out in Schneidersbuero is a must, as is the music instrument museum, as is going to Spreepark and Teufelsberg. The first time I was over there I went to Halberstadt to see part of a performance of As Slow As Possible by John Cage that's going for 639 years, which was a pretty cool day out. It's a fairly long walk from the station though and it's not that well marked.

Didn't get a chance to go into central or vintage audio.. but did get to Schniederladen. Just Music was a typical big music chain, but they did have some interesting stuff like a x0xb0x and other synthy goodness. Vintage audio Berlin has a multivox MX3000 which looks really cool...

....Got to say, Germany is one h**l of a place.

hey, i've been living in berlin for 6 and half years. the people above me have recommended some good stuff but i'll elaborate a bit:

really the only two music stores to check out (as far as synth gear goes) is:

schneiders buero: really nice people, have most of what's currently being made in the analog synth world. not cheap as one would imagine. still a fun place to mess around with some neat modular gear.

vintage audio berlin: amazing place with a really funny chain smoking old school east berliner. it's not the kind of place you'll find an amazing deal on some vintage piece of gear. if anything consider it like going to some really tiny museum of random vintage gear (and vintage toy robots!!!!)

i'd really not bother with just music... it's no different than guitar center or whatever generic bullshit music chain stores they have in australia.

to be honest berlin is not a good place to buy music gear.


also i hope you like drinking/bars because that's pretty much what everyone does here.

if you let me know what kind of music your into i can recommend some venues to check out.
