Self Control
A couple of weeks ago, I purchased an early CD print of Laura Branigan's third album, Self Control. The keyboard players were Robbie Buchanan and film composer Harold Faltermeyer. At the risk of reviving my old habit of repeating previously-explored queries, does anyone know what sort of synth arsenals these two had during that period (not including the acoustic & Rhodes piano parts, which I'm guessing ae courtesy of Robbie Buchanan)?
That info would also shed some light onto what Faltermeyer used for the Beverly Hills Cop score.

Re: Self Control
I've got an old Roland User Group magazine with a brief write-up on Buchanan and even a photo or 2. I'll try to dig it up, scan and post. Back in 2007, I bought his MKS-80. I can't remember if that was the Supe Jupe I ended up keeping (I've been through a few of them the past few years).
The intro to the song is obviously TR-808, which might have been Faltermeyer's. The body of the song sounds like LinnDrum to me.

Re: Self Control
Thank you for the details, Z. I picked up on the 808 also. I wouldn't be surprised if either an MKX80 or JP8 were used on the record.

Re: Self Control
funny this topic is here today, the GTA vice city anniversary trailer was just released and features self control as the soundtrack. If the rest of the record is any good, I might have to check it out...

Do you just mean the title track, or other songs from the album?Kidney05 wrote:funny this topic is here today, the GTA vice city anniversary trailer was just released and features self control as the soundtrack. If the rest of the record is any good, I might have to check it out...

Re: Self Control
just the title track. I admit, that soundtrack probably helped influence me to love the music of the 80s more than any other single thing...MrFrodo wrote:Do you just mean the title track, or other songs from the album?Kidney05 wrote:funny this topic is here today, the GTA vice city anniversary trailer was just released and features self control as the soundtrack. Re: Self Control
That was never tough for this musician, even when I tried avoiding it. I was four years old when that record was brand new, so it's unavoidable. Always gave me "satisfaction."

I like this quote from article:

That's why I bought an electronic drum set. I only wish I could make it sound more like a Linn machine.tekkentool wrote:One is too many drum machines.

Re: Self Control
Midi to a computer then Linn sampled? I use linn samples all the time it sounds fine to me. Check my latest song in the listening lounge it's LM1 samples entirely.MrFrodo wrote:That's why I bought an electronic drum set.
