Need to track down name of a mid-90s synth/midi controller

Post by Sanctions » Wed Dec 12, 2012 7:49 pm

Hello all :) I'm trying to settle an argument with a friend and I need to find out the name of a symth that another friend of ours used around the mid-90s. It was a blue-coloured synth and it had blue LED lights that made it stand out. I'm fairly certain it was called: The <Brand name> Blue - but what is the brand name? The friend who owned the mysterious synth has since passed away.

Okay...
So... keyboard? Rack mount? Desktop? Size?

... the only synth that I can possibly come up with that remotely describes that is the Novation Nova/SuperNova -- but "blue" Maybe even the Oberheim OB-12...especially from that period... Ugh... I'm sure someone else may have an idea... but Blue LED's from the late 90's? I know they were developed in the mid-90's, but wasn't it way later they finally made it to consumer/pro grade electronics in that capacity?

The only synth that I can come up with that is both BLUE and has BLUE LED's is the Dave Smith Poly Evolver or Evolver. Moog Voyager Electric Blue? Not exactly a 'Blue' synth, however...? :?

Heh - this is the basis of our argument! My friend remembers the blue case and blue lights but he is convinced that it wasn't called 'something' blue. What I do know is that this 'thing' was the first of his collection. He went on to own a Yamaha AN1x, a Quasimidi Raven and a Korg Prophecy. The Blue 'thing' he would have owned sometime around 1995-97. He mainly made Drum and Bass but also made a lot of Ambient type music. The blue thing had a keyboard and I'm guessing it would have been a controller rather than a synth. I seem to remember these blue things were quite popular with bedroom producers. I also seem to remember a word like dominator or something powerfu-sounding like that being part of the name but i could be wrong. The main feature was definitely the blue lights though. Thanks for taking the time to reply and help - I really do appreciate it :)

Says it come out in '87. Even if it came with red leds, it could have been modded when blue leds were available.

Yamaha CS1X?

Image

I think I seen one with a blue back light mod once but not 100% sure. The CS1X was almost a better controller than synth. However you'd of probably recognized it as being very similar looking to the AN1X if that was it.

Maybe a Novation Bass-Station?

Korg MS2000?

Roland JP8000?

Almost everything mentioned has come out 2000 and after. The Blue SH-101 was a good suggestion. It seems also possible the synth could be made earlier than the time period in question. I don't know about the LED colors but the ARP 2600 had a version called the Blue Marvin.

PPG also makes all blue synths like the Wave with a blue display.
