I'd say nerd and geek are roughly equivalent.
Though the ascendancy of computer geeks to billionaire status changed that.
Seems like these days geek implies deep knowledge gained at the price of stunted social skills.
Nerd is more towards just "uncool".
Though I hear "unix nerd" or "linux nerd" used a lot, it's mostly a self deprecating way to claim superior hacking skills without actually wearing a cape.
