Marc, you're great. I love your AG videos. You have much wisdom I hope to one day have, but that doesn't change the fact that POLYPHONY IS FUN.
Comparison is the thief of joy.

I know, I'm trying to get that sound from my dozens of soft synths...I think it's impossible without an OB-X, or the OP-X. The only useful sample and hold sound that I've heard.

Pretty much... it's this classic syndrome of pretty much being able to play only those two or three patches. Which is a shame, because they can do other sounds, but it's also kind of like, why bother?

It's like everyone wanting a CS-80 to play "that" vangelis sound. Ignoring that it's a fully featured 2 VCO synth.

Totally... Even on my CS-60s, I could never escape playing the Chariots of Fire intro... It was really frustrating actually.

Heck yeah, whenever I see a JX8-P I go for the "Final Countdown preset". Some synths are just doomed forever because some famous band used it in their top chart hit. Or on every album, ever.

I know, I'm an irritating old fuss.
But...
If you're going to thrill about Oberheim polyphony, you should thrill about the X-Voice synths... which were among the closest to true synthesizer polyphony of any synth ever made. The point of synthesis is to be able to define the timbre and articulation of the sound... including the timbre and articulation of each individual note present in the sound. Polyphony where you're locked into a single oscillator and filter setting for all notes is not consistent with the intent of synthesizers... despite being the affordable way to give rock musicians the ability to play chords.

Because hitting a chord and not knowing what the heck note is going to come out under each finger is how real men play synthesizers?!? And "real/good" music should not contain chords?!? Though I agree that multi-tracking harmonized lines on with mono synths sounds swell and all, there are actually legit, awesome sounding things you can do on an OB-X (besides playing Rush songs, though I've probably just lost anyone on VSE...). And they do sound pretty great.

Those darn filthy rock musicians with their long-haired cocaine-snorting and groupie-shagging polyphonic-playing antics. Not REAL music like..Tangerine Dream.
