does the MicroKORG's filter sound EXACTLY like the MS2000s

Post by Blopho » Thu Jun 20, 2013 12:37 am

does the MicroKORG's filter sound EXACTLY the same? Yesterday I bought a Mk and I noticed that as I would crank up the resonance with the filter all the way open, the sound would fade to nothing. Almost as if the synth was holding back the screeching ''oomph'' I craved.

I was thinking of returning it and saving up for a MS2000. but if that particular quirk is there in the MS2000's filter too, that would be a deal breaker.

I am also open to suggestions for an alternative VA or poly analog with a Kb for up to $700, especially one that would compliment the Blofeld's sound.

haha..

hmmm, an analog poly w/ keyboard for under $700.. that's a tough one. there are a few.. roland's dco stuff (juno 106, alpha juno, jx3p, jx8p). maybe some akai synths (ax60, ax73, ax80).. of course these are all vintage, which could raise a whole 'nother set of issues...

Almost everything in my gear list fits into that category. I would also add the M-Audio Venom to that list (which I also own). But if you want to avoid vintage, and you really like VA, it's hard to beat the Roland Gaia. That thing is a beast! =D> In terms of VA synths in that price range, I'd say it's among the very best in its class.

Turning up the resonance with the filter wide open is always going to result in nothing, it does that with analogue synths too. Set the cutoff to a frequency you can actually hear and turn up the resonance, then you'll hear what it's doing.

Stab is right, it's completely normal for a resonant 24 dB low pass filter to go almost silent with full resonance and wide open cutoff. It doesn't start screaming untl you turn cutoff downwards. The 12dB lowpass filters are usually more pronounced with full resonance, most of them don't turn into a screeching sine wave though.

IMO Gaia is okay, but the Alesis Ion's filter blows it away... plus you get Moog, ARP, JP8, OB, etc. variations. Still a monster of a VA after 10 years, can be fetched used for under $500. Sure it has a few issues like the audio main outputs can go bad, but the aux outputs usually don't. And you can't beat the interface: big rubbery knobs bolted to the surface, 2 mod wheels.

thanks for all the input guys, but after buying and subsequently returning a microKORG to GC, i have decided on a dx7 instead of a va/analog poly. I'm happy with my blofeld for va sounds, and the dx will be much cheaper. :D
