Synthesiser music from 1968?
I'm trying to prepare a mix using music made on synthesisers from 1968 and was wondering if anyone here could recommend any records from that year that is all synthesizer, features a synth heavily or is electronic / electro-acoustic / music concrete. Any recommendations would be great. Thanks!
So far I only know the following:
Walter Carlos - Switched On Bach
Morton Subotnick - The Wild Bull
Edward M. Zajda - Independent Electronic Music Composer
Any recommendations?

David Vorhaus -- "White Noise 1 -- An electric storm in h**l" perhaps?
Not sure whether it´s from 1968, though.

Switched-on Bach was THE synthesizer album in 1968. (Well, it didn't hit the charts until 1969.)
Nothing else pervaded pop culture like it did.

Definitely check Silver Apples - Silver Apples...
I sure others can chime in with other recommendations just from 1968, but what in particular is special about that year for your mix?

I guess it's the dawn of synthesizers he's after. There really wasn't much of an industry before S-o-B because noone really thought you could use a synth to make music with, only weird effect and bleep bloop experimental noise.
Carlos changed all that around by proving a modular synth could be used to make real music with, even though it was severely multitracked.
Before this it was only Hammond Organs and massive pipe organs, which is a kind of additive synthesizer in itself, really.

He said Music concrete, so I assume that's exactly what he's after.Bitexion wrote:There really wasn't much of an industry before S-o-B because noone really thought you could use a synth to make music with, only weird effect and bleep bloop experimental noise.

Re: Synthesiser music from 1968?
I'm planning on making a mix of electronic music from that year for a friends birthday, he was born in 1968. It seems an interesting year for the history of electronic music and synthesizers.
As far as I can tell Buchla, Moog and EMS were all producing synths around that year (what other companies were active then?) and wondered what recordings their products may have featured on. Aside from the classic synth records I'm also interested in Stockhausen, Dockstader and other electro acoustic / concrete composers who may have been making use of synths alongside tone generators etc... oh, and any prog/rock/funk/soul records heavy on the synth
According to some sources these records are from 1968:
Beaver & Krause - The Nonesuch Guide to Electronic Music
Douglas Leedy - Entropical Paradise
David Tudor - Rainforest version I

Daily Nightly by The Monkees featured Micky Dolenz playing a spaced-out solo on a Moog, released in Nov. 1967.

Although released in 1969, side 2 of George Harrison's "Electronic Sounds" LP was recorded in 1968.

Leviathan '99 (music/sound for BBC radio play, 1968)
A short excerpt from the "suite" (arranged a few years later) can be heard 1:15 into "What The Future Sounded Like". Still one of my favourite electronic works.
Narcissus (not strictly electronic but sounds like it could be, for solo flute and 2 tape machines, 1968)
