Monosynth on Xeno & Oaklander Vigils

Post by Walter Ego » Sat Jul 20, 2013 7:52 am

There's a mono used for lead lines in almost every song on their record Vigils. I have been listening to that record a ton lately, and I am wondering what instrument they're using. I have found precious little in the way of gear lists or videos on the interwebs. I'm hoping there's someone on here who's seen them live or even shared the stage with them who can shed some light here.

My amateurish guess is the SH-101 they use quite a bit; or could that sound be coaxed out of an MS-20/10, I wonder? Very lovely sound. Once in a while the playing style makes me think it's a touch surface rather than a traditional keyboard, like on the Wasp or something. But it could just be his style.

Well, here's a youtube audio video of Non Senti from Vigils. The lead sound appears around 0:45.

Played live with Martial Canterel which is Sean solo. He used a Sh101 running sequences, changing it with the keys, and a drum machine. He may have had some small portable modular thing.

Yeah, I saw this video, but it's the only one I could find. The song they play is from Sentinelle, I think. He keeps that 101 very close...but there's no real lead sound like there is in just about every track on Vigils.

I thought they were actually a bit pretentious, but I still like their music a lot.

I would really like to see them live now...

Yeah, he was a pretty nice dude. No video footage of him, but I do have video of us playing before him haha.
We played everything live, except the drums. At 5:00 you can see me playing the dx bass line throughout the entire track which was pretty nerve wracking. All the sounds Chase and I used fit onto a single floppy disk. Him on the Emax2, and me with an EPS16+. The band doesn't exist anymore, but it was a good time.

Nice video. Blue Rose is the song, if I'm not mistaken? I love the live version from Vigils...still, I appreciate the amount of improvisation...it's a real performance, not a canned show.

It looks like he's rocking TWO 101s there, side by side. Probably at least one is to trigger his little modular. I also appreciate Liz's RS-09, at least I'm pretty sure that's what it is...I just got one, and don't plan to let it go for some time.

Some pretty decent material in there. Very nice DX bass.

Not sure where you're from, but Martial Canterel's on tour next month in east coast US & Canada:

There was a good X&O gear interview on LeVoyage.nl but the website disappeared. The Vice Motherboard docu seems to be down too.
