Not even artfully done. It's like someone hit it with a chainsaw.

"I removed a PCB that apparently operates a large amount of keys"

"Why doesn't pitch bend or mod wheel work?"

Ace engineering, there.

I could say something daft like "glad it's only a NL1"

...but I won't.

Glad to see I'm not the only one to saw a keyboard in half because it was too big.
I modified an old Cheetah 5 octave down to 2 1/2 octaves for controlling a MAQ 16/3 sequencer. Did it over 10 years ago, back when a short keyboard MIDI controller was almost impossible to find.

That worked almost too good with the MAQ 16/3. Had a start/stop on the board, and two assignable wheels to map the sequence length for row 1 and 2. The keys transposed the sequence, along with foot switches to advance/reverse the sequence memories. So much fun you could crash the MAQ 16/3 if you changed the program while setting the sequence length wheels. Used that setup for years.

I thought the person had intended to separate the keys from the main unit not cut it vertically in half like that.

Wow... Not only has he ruined a perfectly fine synth and done a thoroughly s**t job of it, he's also made it pretty much worthless in the process. Genius that.

I'm not usually against modding in most cases, but too many people ruin gear by not doing it right. :|

This is more hackjob than mod job I'd say..
