was the pro 5 the only funk synth
Hi Guys......have been looking through numerous you tube clips of funk 70/80s bands...the pro 5 comes up as being the most used synth for the brassey warble stabb sound...
could i therefore say that this synth nailed this area because of the 2 OCS per voice structure...?
cheers.

Yes, no other synth was ever used for funk, particularly not the minimoog.

Stevie Wonder was pretty damn funky and used a CS80 among others.

Re: was the pro 5 the only funk synth
Since synths in funk predate the Prophet, answer is plenty of other synths were in use.
MiniMoog most prominently, ARP strings (Solina, Omni).
Some guys used Odysseys just to distinguish themselves from the Moog frenzy...George Duke, Herbie Hancock.

I listened to Hatfield and the North at Rainbow. They were very wonderful and they made my heart a prisoner.

If you're looking for funk, I would think Moog. Get a Liberation, and get your funk on!

While very funky indeed, the Clavinet isn't quite a synthesizer.Psy_Free wrote:Honourable mention for the Clavinet.

I'm in the minority but I think any synth is a funk synth if you're comfortable with the pitch and mod benders. I personally like the sh2 for this.

Oberheims were used a lot, Prince, The Time, Terry lewis/Jimmy Jam and lot´s of other funkbands.
OB-Xa and OB-8 were the most common AFAIK.

Yeah you'd think someone with a username of "princefan3" would have known about the funkiness of the Oberheims...

I heartily concur.Psy_Free wrote:Honourable mention for the Clavinet.
true, but considering the amount of outboard effects used on some clavs there's a chance they could be mistaken for synths.Kenneth wrote:While very funky indeed, the Clavinet isn't quite a synthesizer.Psy_Free wrote:Honourable mention for the Clavinet.

Re: was the pro 5 the only funk synth
And with good reason. Most other synthesizers are for synthpop, trance, or prog rock, and as such are obviously unsuitable for funk, or indeed any genre outside their particular millieu. Why, the very idea...Stab Frenzy wrote:Yes, no other synth was ever used for funk, particularly not the minimoog.
