Tying to find out what synth was used

Post by logic1989 » Fri Oct 11, 2013 9:26 pm

Hello all first time using this forum. Wondering if someone with a keen ear could tell me what synth was used to create the lead sound in the track. The knocking enveloped one.

I dont have a youtube link just a buy link for some audio.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Im not daft mate anyone can knock up a square with an envelope. Hoping someone with a keen ear can tell me which synth was used to create it, which was my question to begin with.

a hundred different synths could do that sound. most any monosynth will get there; this one sounds more Roland late70s/early 80s to my ears.
it's also somewhat overdriven somewhere in the recording chain. doesn't have to be the synth itself. that's a blown out square wave D&B bass that's fairly standard. if you have a guitar distortion pedal by chance, then try running through that on minimum gain.

i have no idea how to 'knock up a square with an envelope'(is that like pregnancy?). the only EG i've encountered that will produce usable, trackable audio square waveforms is the serge VCS's end-of-cycle output...oh, and the modcan dualLFO , which is a VCS variant to begin with.
you certainly don't need a serge or modular to get that bass sound, though.

No... I actually think he does. One with at least 3 panels.

Synths on records are usually smothered in effects aswell as layered with other synths, it's very hard to hear what kind of synth it is just by listening. The sound can be coloured by the amp used aswell, if he wasn't recording straight into the mixer.

The best way is to try find articles that describe the making of the album somewhere online.

I don't hear this at all. It's far too hollow sounding than my SH09 for instance, unless he's EQ'd it that way. It sounds too clean like there is no recorded signal path at all, it's all from in the box. I don't know why I get this feeling as loads of people are capable of recording old synths to a really high quality and effects in the box help toward this type of sound too. I still think it's the logic ES M (ha I accidentally put E in the post above).

It sounds like an early Moog; or a Korg MS20 or a MonoPoly (which could achieve that sound). It's likely not a VA, and surely some 24db/oct filter synth.

The square wave is very pure and the filter and resonance movement by envelope are very 'oily' suggesting an early moog or korg. That said early Roland monophonics also sound quite oily in the bass end too, as do ARP synth.

Your best bet if you want to achieve that is to acquire an early analogue monosynth (or top notich recreation like a LittlePhatty).

Kevin.

Having said all of this - the artist themself will probably come on here and say it was a plugin given away free with Computer Music magazine :-)

Thanks Knolan for a good answer, and to everyone else. Can't be a VU its too rich in colour and must be polyphonic as the Osc balance changes to one with a higher pitch during an automation later on in the track. Def got effect's on it but the tone of the squares is unlike anything i have used before. I have a Slim Phatty stage 2 and a Virus TI Polar and have had a play with a fair few other synths in my time, but not a monopoly so will have to check one out.
